How about this trade...
Dolphins trade their #90 pick, James McKnight, and Darryl Gardener to the Washington Redskins for their #18 pick.
Result: Dolphins get a first round pick, lose James McKnight only to be replaced by Cris Carter for a similar price, drop Darryl Gardener's salary and sign DE in the process. Washington gets proven DT that they need and a speedy WR they are looking for.
Then,
Dolphins trade #18 pick and Patrick Surtain to Detroit for their #3 pick and their #35 pick.
Result, Jamar Fletcher moves into Surtain's spot. Dolphins sign quality nickel back and save $4 million in the process.
Detroit gets out of their pick as planned and gets young, proven CB, a need position. Dont want to take a chance with Jammer.
Miami now has saved about $8-10 million in salary each over the next 5 years. They sign a veteran durable DE and a nickelback and Cris Carter to take the place of the three they traded away.
Total Savings: $6 million. They draft McKinnie at OT with the third pick and get him for 5 years. Cost $3 million per.
They draft DE Dwight Feeney, TE Daniel Graham, or OG Kendall Simmons, whoever is available with the #35 pick.
OR they pick OG Fonoti with the 18th pick and keep Surtain.
Would you pull this off?
We would have a dominant OL for years to come and free up some money in the future to be more flexible.
