There are multiple reports of (G) Alan Faneca skipping Steelers mini-camp, because he is no longer happy with his situation in Pitt.

The sitiuation got me thinking that if both of the top Qb's are off the board Faneca might be an interesting piece of a trade down move with Pitt.

While a possible trade of pick 9 for pick 15 and Faneca would be great, I think we might have to give up a little more to make it happen. Not much though, maybe a 4th at most. If he wasn't openly expressing his dissatisfaction with the team I think we would have to pay more, but I think his discontent can be our gain. Especially since the Steelers organization is mighty thrifty.

Granted all this is conditional on the Steelers having a strong interest in someone who is still on the board. A prime candidate would be Levi Brown since the Steelers seem to have an interest in him.

Or Staley I would take either.....Really I would want whoever we rated the highest thats still on the board

With Alan Faneca being a Pro Bowl OG, it would take a 1st or 2nd round pick to acquire him. If by some chance Pittsburgh was to agree to trade Faneca for a 4th round pick this year you can bet it will include a conditional 1st day pick next year as well.

I agree he is worth a good bit, I was'nt saying we could get him for a 4th.

The trade I was proposing was us swapping picks in the first with the Steelers and getting Faneca as well. The difference in value between pick 9 and pick 15 is 300 which equals a late 2nd round pick. So Feneca could equal the 300 point difference rather than the steelers having to throw us a 2nd to move up.

But like I said this may not be enough so we might have to throw a 4th or 6th in the mix.

God I can't wait for draft day.......lol

Eh, I don't know. Faneca is a great player, but he is getting pretty old and only has a few years in him. If we were to trade down with Pitt, I would want to be compensated with draft picks rather than Faneca. We could then use those picks on guys like Justin Blalock, Aaron Sears, Samson Satele that could be pro-bowlers for the next decade. I know that none of them are sure-things like Faneca would be, but we are in rebuilding mode and need to start adding some young talent to the team.

I was thinking about this last night. I think we can get a great player at 15 and faneca.

This trade would require something else than a O-lineman as bait.
If somehow the Faneca's situation becomes a problem, they'll trade for lone picks. If they trade him for a 2nd round there's a right price for him.
But if Randy can make it happen, then i think this may go like this:
Faneca + #15 = #9 + #219 + Conditional 2008 pick

This would be a great trade. It wouldn't cost as much as people think for 3 reasons. 1. He's getting older. 2. He is not happy with Pittsburgh's situation. 3. He is a free agent at the end of the year and they (Pit) probably won't have the money to re-sign him.

What people here are forgetting is Faneca was the worst offensive lineman for Pitt in pass blocking last season .. He has regressed greatly in that regard, most likely because he is getting older.. While he was Pitt's best run blocker last season, he was their worst pass blocker.. His pass blocking was never top notch, but last season he has become very bad at it..

Let's remember some O-linemen who were good but got worse with age.. Remember Kevin Donnally coming to Miami when he was older ? As well as Kevin Gogan ? Both were much better with their former teams than with Miami.. We'd be getting the same thing with faneca.. Don't let his multiple pro bowls fool you, he is not as good as he once was..

Heck, on a Steelers message board they had a thread on Faneca about him wanting to leave the steelers , and to a fan they all said to let him go for low round pick.. They dont even want him, because he has regressed so much as a player and he is very overrated .

Then when you combine his salary and giving up picks, it would be stupid to trade for him.. This Miami team needs to get younger and stop giving up draft assets for players who are old and overpaid . Whether it be defense or offense..

I'm not gonna say that his age is not an issue, but Everything you said about Faneca could and sometimes has been said about Joey Porter. While we did not have to give up a pick for him we sure shelled out the cash. Personally I loved the Porter signing and if we could get him as part of a trade down I would be happy with Faneca. I say this because we would have to give up very little on top of the trade down in my opinion.

I also agree we need to get younger but I feel that Faneca would be a great presence on the interior of our line for at least 3 or 4 more years, barring any unforeseen injuries.

I'm not worried about his level of play falling off that fast, but that is just an opinion. And just like your opinion about his current and future level of play, neither can be proven true at the moment. All we can do is hope I'm right if we did make the trade and hope your right if we don't.

Won't happen, this is a ploy by Faneca to get a trade with Arizona to play under Grimm.

I would agree that this is a very strong possibility. Honestly I would make no bets on this deal or one like it happening, this is just the product of thinking about possibilities after reading the Faneca articles.
