If we could trade our 2(a) and 3 picks to Philadelphia for their #26 (like I have in my sig), would you do it? I know the general attitude seems to be one of stockpiling picks, but I think I would gladly give up our 3rd round pick for a shot at Staley, Ginn Jr., Revis/Houston, or Grubbs . . . particularly if Quinn falls to us at #9.

I think there is great value in the 2nd and 3rd rounds . . . so part of me is wary to give up any picks there. However, I also think there is a pretty substantial dropoff between the talent at the end of Round 1 and the rest of the first day players. With two 2nds and a 3rd, it seems only natural that we might consider jumping up a bit . . . even if it's only a handful of spots to grab Kalil or Blalock.
 
Staley is a great prospect, but I think thats too much to give up to try to get him. Keep those two picks and try to address multiple needs. Or give them up to move up and draft Quinn, I'd prefer that if he slides out of the top three.

It's really only one pick since we would essentially be swapping an early second for a late first. I'm just not sure if any of the combinations we could come up with would be better than the players available to us late in the first.

What I'm really asking is what 3rd round pick is worth the dropoff? Is Samson Satele worth the dropoff from Joe Staley to Arron Sears? Is Dan Bazuin worth the dropoff from Ted Ginn Jr. to Steve Smith? Is Ben Patrick worth the dropoff from Chris Houston to Eric Wright?

I really don't know . . . which is why I posed the question. I think Staley is probably the only one I am completely sure about. I would definitely take him over . . . say . . . a combination of Arron Sears and Samson Satele.

The "elite talent level" will be gone by the 10th or 11th pick and that is your talent drop. The talent will then plateau well into the 2nd round. This might not be true for every position, but it is true for QB, Wr, db and some OL positions. I would not trade a third and a second for a late round first pick because all of the positions I named earlier are "need" positions for us and there is depth in those positions in this draft.

QB really is not applicable. WR? I would say Ginn Jr. and Meachem are clearly a step above anyone we could hope to secure in the 2nd or 3rd (Jason Hill, Steve Smith, Anthony Gonalez, or even Craig Davis if we are very lucky). DB? Definitely do not agree there. After Revis and Houston, I think there is clearly a dropoff. Even guys like Aaron Ross and Marcus McCauley (who likely would not be there in the 2nd when we pick) are clearly a step down. I will give you OL simply because I agree that multiple positions would help, but at the same time there are no safe LT picks after Staley . . . and I think that is our greatest need on the line.
