I believe we should give Ellerbe and Wheeler another chance this year but, Hickey does not appear to agree with wanting to bring in Jackson. Cutting either makes no sense, as we have too many needs to fill and cannot afford the cap hits. However, because of their contracts, I could see the possibility of trading either one.

Ellerbe has a 5 year $35M contract with $14M guaranteed. We paid a $7M signing bonus and a $1M guaranteed salary last year. This year's $6M salary is guaranteed, and that's it. If traded, we take a $5.6M hit on bonus but save the $6M salary, and have to pay a replacement. A trading team is only on the hook for $6M, and can easily re-do the deal.

Wheeler has a 5 year $26M contract with $13M guaranteed. We paid a $7M signing bonus, and a $1M guaranteed salary last year. This year's $5M salary is guaranteed, and that's it. If traded, we take a $5.6M hit on bonus but, save the $5M salary, and have to pay a replacement. A trading team is only on the hook for $5M, and Wheeler's salary for 2015 is just $2.9M.

IF Hickey wants to change LB's, I think he could get it done by trade.

I think Wheeler would be the one they may shop

Nobody is trading for either of these contracts esp after the crappy bottom rung seasons they had.

not with the cap hits

I always find it funny when fans of a team expect another team take a player off their hands that the fan thinks is trash. If the player is so bad, why would another team want the player?

Cut or keep is the answer.

I could see teams willing to add Wheeler for 2 years and $7.9M total.

no team that saw him play last year. Neither he or Ellerbee should be making 4 million a year muxh less what they make.
We might as well keep them and see if they improve then take those hits. I didn't hate the Wheeler signing as much as the Ellerbee signing , but they both stunk to high heavens last year.

I want to keep both. Just looked up how a trade could work after the interest in Jackson.

No way either gets traded.

Best scenario, we sign D'q Jackson from Cleveland and Wheller is our #4 LB then when his cap hit reduces to near nothing next year we can cut/trade him.

But I don't see any team trading for either with those cap hits, especially with servicable "stop gap" LB's flooding the market.

NFL teams go far beyond just 1 year with another team. For example, Ellerbe looked much better in a 3-4 than our 4-3, and Wheeler played much better in Oakland.

well his hit will be 4.2 million, not sure that's next to nothing. we will save exactly 200,000 dollars by cutting him next year.

Im pretty sure they do. Ellerbee has performed at an above average level once in his entire career and basically the same for wheeler. You can take to the bank that no team is trading for either player

A trading team can re-structure the deals, and the players only have $5-6M guaranteed which can be switched to a new signing bonus.

True, more like saving the dead money.
