The Dolphins’ revamping of their receiving corps this offseason wasn’t limited to the wide receiver position because there also was a significant change at tight end.
The Dolphins will bring four other young tight ends to training camp, and a big focus this summer will be determining which of those four also deserves to be on the 53-man roster.
RETURNING VETERANS
Gerell Robinson (6-4, 220) — Robinson is listed as a second-year player, but he got his first shot in the NFL as a member of the Cardinals and Broncos practice squads in 2012. He appeared in the final two games for the Dolphins last season after being activated from the practice squad but did not catch a pass while playing nine offensive snaps.
VETERAN ADDITIONS
• Jake Stoneburner (6-3, 249) —Stoneburner was signed to a futures contract two days after the end of the regular season after having two stints on the Dolphins practice squad last season. Stoneburner appeared in nine games for the Green Bay Packers in 2013, but has yet to catch a pass in the NFL.
ROOKIES OR FIRST-YEAR PLAYERS
• Arthur Lynch (6-5, 255) — Of the four tight ends on the roster besides Cameron and Sims, Lynch is the only one who was drafted, although he missed his entire rookie season with a back injury after being selected by the Dolphins in the fifth round in 2014. Lynch has pass-catching ability, but his forte clearly resides in the blocking department.
• Tim Semisch (6-8, 267) — Semisch stands out a bit because of his size, but he more importantly stood out with his performance at the post-draft rookie minicamp. He was the only one of the tryout players signed by the Dolphins and took the place on the roster of fellow tight end Ryan Taylor, a four-year veteran who had been signed in February. Semisch didn’t catch a lot of passes at Northern Illinois, but his size alone makes him an intriguing prospect
