Matt Ryan wasn't a consensus #1 overall pick. It wasn't like they "reached" for Jake Long over Ryan. If anything, Jake Long was the consensus best player available for most scouts.
Ryan has turned out to be a stud behind a great OL and with awesome weapons (Turner, White, now Tony G).
Henne thus far is looking pretty damn good too - with just a good OL and running game but horrible-to-below-average options at WR and TE.
And although Ryan Clady and Jeff Otah and Sam Baker from that draft have also ended up being solid-to-elite LTs, it's still not that easy a position to fill and we have to be happy about Jake Long.
If anything, the Trio have drafted excellently...
2008
Long - elite LT
Merling - very solid starting 3-4 DE
Henne - possible franchise QB
Langford - very good starting 3-4 DE
Donald Thomas - very good starting OG
Shawn Murphy was our only bust for (4th round) but we got Bess as an UDFA and even Lex Hilliard in the 6th is a decent STs contributor. Even 7th rounder Lionel Dotson is decent DL depth.
That's a VERY nice draft!
2009
Vontae - Not sure about this pick yet. He'll have to prove to be better than Hakeem Nicks and Rey Maualuga for me. And so far he has been erratic but the talent is there to develop and we may just need to be patient (see his brother Vernon in SF who took some time to develop but is now leading the NFL in receiving TDs).
Pat White - questionable pick if only for the wildcat but maybe a reasonable pick if they really believe he can be a NFL starting QB one day and wanted him to push/insure Henne. I don't like him coming in cold to run the wildcat but if he gives us a solid backup QB for 10 years, then fine...I guess. Questionable pick but not horrible.
Sean Smith - most exciting play maker on our team and we're lucky we got him after trading down! Great pick!
Pat Turner - Not looking good so far. Louis Murphy (OAK) and/or Jonnie Knox (CHI) already proving to be better.
Hartline - Decent pick for a possession guy but upside might be limited due to below average speed for the NFL.
Nalbone - Meh...can't beat out Haynos thus far which isn't saying much.
This draft is just looking okay so far. We'll learn a lot more about Vontae with Will Allen out now.

The Trio has had some bad FA signings and re-signings.
Wilford and Gibril Wilson are their most notorious signings but what about...
Re-singing a very average Channing Crowder for almost as much money (I think) as was paid to Mike Peterson (JAX FA who went to ATL).
And re-signing Y. Bell with his injury history and age over better vets like Brian Dawkins and Darren Sharper (if they were willing to go with older vets at safety). And the fact that they signed Bell to play with Wilson when they're both really STRONG safeties.
Still, they've also brought in some solid FAs like Jake Grove and Randy Starks, and made some nice little trades in Tony McDaniel (for a 7th round pick) and Fasano/Ayodle (both for a 4th round pick).

But the biggest error imo was to not cut bait on Ted Ginn and not add any other serious receiving weapons to the offense (even when they knew David Martin wouldn't be back).
You just can't go into two seasons in a row with Ted Ginn as your "best" receiving option. Ginn isn't a threat to anyone but our team.
If they couldn't get anything for Ginn in a trade, then he should've just been benched.
And if they couldn't get a better receiver in FA or via trade, then they probably should've drafted Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt despite Vontae being on the board.

Overall, the Trio isn't our biggest problem. They've been pretty darn good. IMO, their biggest mistake has been sticking with Ted Ginn. Ginn cost us that Saints game yesterday more than any other single reason (mostly due to his bobble of that sideline pass that ended up in Darren Sharper's hands for a pick 6 and not to mention his 3rd down drop at the end of the game and of course, taking a starting WR spot away from someone who could actually catch and might play with some sack).
The Trio should've tried to move Ginn to KC for Bowe when he was rumored to be on the block but short of that, they should bench Ginn no matter what.
