I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the contract negotiations that are apparently going on with both Long and Gholston. I think it is a smoke screen, and we are trying to get someone who wants one of these two guys to swap first round picks with us, and maybe give us an additional 2nd or 3rd.

I'm sure deception plays into it. I bet reports come out about contract negotiations with at least two more players in the coming days/weeks. They aren't exactly tipping their hand by starting multiple negotiations plus they get a feel for who will be the easiest to sign. I like it.

I think Jake Long is a smokescreen but not for the reasons you stated. I think it is to trade Jason Taylor. If everyone knows/thinks we are going to take Chris Long then it is conceivable teams think we "have" to get rid of Jason.. which is true. But if we play it up like we are going to take Jake Long and keep Jason we MAY get more for jason if a trade can be made before we pick #1.

The fact that we are reportedly negotiating with Gholston makes that tactic unlikely.

They could be trying to gain leverage for a trade or gain leverage for contract talks. Either way, the Dolphins will benefit. Nobody has a clue what they're doing with the pick. A week ago it seemed like Ryan and C.Long were the top prospects. This week it's J.Long, V.Gholston, and a suprise name in D.Harvey. I love how Parcells and Co. are handling things.

I feel very strongly that the guy they will actually draft is still completely under the radar right now. Be prepared.

Everyone reads into the word smokescreen too much. I think they are just negotiating with any player that gives us the best deal possible. What makes everyone think we are going to trade that pick away after they sign? The phone lines arent ringing for any trade for the first pick. We have no argument as to why another team should take the first pick from us, unless we're giving it away.

I think it is what it is. We are just negotiating to get someone who will take less. Simple as that.

Trust me, there are a lot of moving parts which have to be switched on and off at the right time to get to where Miami wants to be.

You are significantly oversimplifying this process.

Agreed, if we stay there. I think we should also be prepared for a trade at less than the draft chart's recommended amount of compensation.

That Miami has apparently cooled to Ryan and hasn't gone anywhere near DMF doesn't mean much to me. Buddy Ryan once called Keith Byars a "medical reject" and then drafted him in the first round, anyway. Cutthroats and liars abound everywhere this time of year.

Yeah youre right. We're gonna end up right where we are. Negotiating with several players for the top pick... trying to get the best bargain. Im not oversimplifying anything. Its the truth. Noone will trade with us. Theres no player good enough to draft 1st and pay that kind of money. We have to swallow the pick which is exactly what we are going to do. Unless we give it up for less than we are supposed to or wait out the clock and have the Rams pick ahead of us.

Everyone wants that dream trade where we get multiple picks but its not gonna happen in this years draft. We are too high and noone is coveted enough to reach for.
