Everybody here needs to step back a second. Look at things rationally.

Saban seems to be a good coach. I think he's certainly better than Wannstedt, though Wannstedt did win a lot of games. He's only got one year under his belt, so before I proclaim him the best coach who's ever lived I'd like to see at least this next season. I can't believe people can honestly say "I have full faith in Saban, and whatever he does must've been carefully planned, calculated, and in the best interests of the team" when it's likely Saban's doing the best he can rather than having his way with the rest of the league. I don't believe Culpepper was the first choice. Failing to acknowledge this possibility is unbelievably naive. I will say that one of the hallmarks of intelligence - possibly the first - is acknowledging that there are people out there smarter than you are.

Now, we haven't won anything yet. We were 9-7, which aside from 2004 was the worst single-year record Wannstedt posted. The team has plenty of talent. The talent, in fact, might be in place for a playoff run. If we learn anything from professional sports, it's that championships are not won on paper. (See: White Sox, Yankees, Red Sox, Astros). Many of you are looking at the best-case scenario of both who we can get in free agency and how they will perform. If Culpepper comes back completely healthy, if Ronnie Brown develops well, if we sign Julian Peterson and he's completely healthy, and if Poole and Daniels continue to develop, then yes, we'll be quite a team. The probability of all that happening to the letter is basically nil, however. There will be setbacks. Somebody will get hurt. One or more of the free agent signings will ultimately be a huge disappointment.

Start from 0-0 in September and then work from there. Watch the team play, and then get more excited. Winning the March media championship, as it were, is completely meaningless.
