Because if kept he’ll beat out Ewers and it makes 0 sense to cut him. We don’t save anything and overall it hurts the team by taking on more of a cap hit than needed. It’s not only the additional 11 million but it’s also the cost of a replacement which is why I’m against signing someone like Malik. Don’t put any more money into the qb position and start fresh with a rookie qb.

If all works out Tua looks good and maybe you can get some value back as there is no longer much guaranteed money left on his contract. I still think you can trade him this offseason but Miami would have to eat an around 75-80% of the contract. That’s the only way I’d be okay with taking a negative hit if we got a 3rd or so in return. Think there will be a few teams that may trade for him if they are only responsible for paying him 15 or so million as its a pretty brutal offseason for qb and there’s a few playoff ready teams. As bad as Tua was this year, colts or Vikings probably winning 11-12 games with the same qb play even if no improvement.
Ok thanks.

-Do not think it is a guarantee he beats out Ewers. Part of it depends on if he even shows up ready to play. He shows up like last year, forget it. Tua was benched for a reason last year. I think Ewers actually looked better than Tua was playing at the end. Ewers even was out there w no Waddle and Achane for the last game. Ewers had little in the way of experience or reps. He showed a higher ceiling than Tua. Better arm and can move better. It was the right decision in my view.

-Agree, not interested in spending money on Malik or Mac or anyone else

-I am fine trading Tua. My guess is we pay all but $5mm-$10mm of what is left on his salary, and maybe get a 7th in two years plus a bag of balls. I am fine with that.

-I do not think you can let him practice or near the field because of the $20mm injury guarantee for 2027. Tua may have to waive that if he wants a shot at a career. No team will let him on the field with that risk. Unclear to me if Tua wants to have a career anymore.

In summary I liken this to a bad marriage that needs to end. Further, this is a situation where you marry a supermodel that was working, she then got fat, spent all the money, stopped working, and you still owe her alimony.

Ewers wasn’t better, at best they were even which isn’t saying much as that was Tua’s absolute worst by far last year. I do think many of the issues are scheme related as some of the route trees and concepts just made 0 sense. McDaniel was on big time fraud alert and just couldn’t adjust.

You are severely underestimating the qb market. Seahawks got a 3rd for Geno and I don’t believe any of the salary was paid coming off a similar year like Tua just had and Tua is much younger and has much higher highs. It is an awful year to need a qb and there’s a handful that do that are playoff ready. We are about to see Darnold on his 5th team likely win a Super Bowl, one teams trash is another teams treasure especially when those teams aren’t incompetent and can put together a solid roster. If Miami is footing most of the bill and most the guarenteed don’t see why there wouldn’t be some suitors for a mid round pick.

The 20 million has been covered at length in another thread. It’s not just 20 million for an injury. It’s 20 million for like a Ryan Shazier type of injury. It’s only 3 million if it were a normal injury.

Re last paragraph, Eichenberg got one of those injuries in training camp this year. It can happen. Tua has Eichenberg risk times 100. I do not think the Dolphins or any other team will discount that risk.

Re the rest of it, we disagree. The good news is we get to find out. 🍿

Other.

He may open a chain of Putt-Putt arenas. He may try the PGA route, but that hip swivel may haunt him.

He doesn't belong in the NFL.

I still think there is a decent chance he walks from the game once paid out on his current contract. He acts like he has little love for the sport.

29.) Tua Tagovailoa

2025 stats: 14 G, 67.7 cmp%, 2660 yds, 20 TD, 15 INT

Last year’s ranking: 19th

It’s been quite the fall from grace for Tua. From leading the league in yards to being benched for Quinn Ewers this season, it’s been a rocky road. Tua’s future is uncertain at this point—his contract (one of the largest in the league) has handcuffed the Dolphins, but Miami looks like they’re done with him. Their next head coach is going to be put in a weird spot.

Why did Tua fall off so badly? It’s simple: he can’t play out of structure to save his life. If he’s playing in structure, he’s a decent, even good QB. When the Dolphins’ offense was at the top of the league and humming a few years ago, the engine was Tua playing within the structure of the system that Mike McDaniel had designed for him. When it all fell apart, it was because the league figured out that the solution to beating Miami was getting Tua to play out of structure. This isn’t an issue exclusive to Tua; there’s a lot of QBs in the league that struggle when the play breaks down. The difference with Tua compared to the others is that he doesn’t have the physical tools to still make something happen. His arm is weak, and he can’t scramble due to his concussion history.

One last issue with Tua—he can’t play in the cold. If I’ve done my research correctly, he’s 0-6 when starting in a game which has a temperature of 40 degrees or colder. For a quarterback that already needs a very specific set of circumstances to be just right to succeed, another limitation isn’t very enticing for teams interested in him. The Dolphins are in a tough spot. Tua’s contract makes it so that any trade with him would likely require the Dolphins to get pretty much nothing in return. Tua’s future as a starter looks grim, but he has one positive moving forward: his contract, as well as his past success, may give him one more chance to prove that he has what it takes to be a starter.

Traded to Indy or KC for a 6th round pick, with the Dolphins paying close to 90% of his contract.

I voted starter. The others haven't shown much. Sully did say that TT is still in the mix to start. So, thats my pick.
did you mean for the cricket team over there? although i don't think tua would even make a good spin bowler at this point. used to love me some shane warne!

It would be surprising and then again wouldn't be if they either keep him or move on. But really he needs a coach who can believe in him if they decide to keep him.

Tua was injured bad last season. Even McD eluded to it in his chargers press conference. I keep hearing people say that Tua will be good with another team. They obviously didn’t actually watch this year. Tua cannot throw the ball downfield at all. There is a hip injury that is hindering him even further than before.

This really isn’t true. Tua threw the ball further in 2025 than he had been throwing it in previous years. Distance of throws is of little relevance to effective QB play, but as of late November Tua had thrown considerable more long-distance passes (50+ yards in air) than guys like Allen or Herbert.
