Hello all,
I remember hearing previously that Dolphins have an option in March of 2025 to pay a large portion or bonus? on Tua's 2026 contract year. For understanding purposes, let's assume the Team decides not to pay that in March 2025, does that mean that Tua plays on a one-year contract in 2025? How does that work? Thanks!

That gets added to the dead cap and Tua is no longer on the team. The 2025 roster bonus is guaranteed

Below is what I am referring to -
  • $54M 2026 compensation fully guarantees March 14, 2025 (injury guaranteed at sign)
That’s not a bonus. It says that 54M guarantees fully 14th of this year.

For all intents and purposes. Tua is on the Fins through the 2026 season. After that season you have a legitimate out.

Yes, not a bonus, I just couldn't remember the term but your link in your first reply clarified it's the 2026 fully guaranteed compensation. Thanks.

Pardon my ignorance, but can any expert explain what people mean when they keep saying Miami has an out after the next season, the 2025 season?

No problem.

Get the guy a legit Line this offseason
Never gonna happen. Grier can't build a good o-line full of competent, healthy players, and McDaniel doesn't think that a strong o-line is important. The only way Tua will get a good o-line in 2025 is if he goes to another team.

If they were a serious org they'd release Tua with a post-June 1 designation before his 2026 salary becomes fully-guaranteed in March.

It means that a team can potentially cut the player without leaving large amounts of dead cap

They don't really as 2026 salary becomes fully guaranteed this year. It was only an out if he retired or something this season, which we know is not happening. From what I can determine the contract is structured so they only have a one year dead cap hit if they decide to cut/trade him. It's not that bad a situation for Dolphins compared to a number of other big $$ QB deals we've seen recently e.g Russ at Denver, Cousins, Watson etc.

You gain nothing by cutting Tua next year besides pretty much wasting a season.

In fact post June 1st they’d owe 20 million more this year in dead cap and an additional 25 million next year.

Why would you throw a season a way only to pay more dead money when he can play this year either he stays healthy and we are competitive or he doesn’t and can be cut next year. 2026 is the earliest you can cut and split June 1st will still take some dead cap but will be much less and you’re not completely throwing away a season.
