A group of ragtag journeyman veterans, busts for draft picks, inexperienced rookies, system players, and a gimmick offense can do the unthinkable at the beginning of the season:
Overthrow the division leading stalwart and the "class of the division", the New England Patriots.
What? The Dolphins? Beating the PATRIOTS? Surely, you jest.
Let me ask you one question, my fellow Dolfans: why not?
Nobody gave us a chance this season. I didn't at first. The Arizona loss had me going into a cycle of "here we go again".
But I'm sure you remember what we did in that Week 3 game. We didn't just unveil a new offense, we just didn't shock the NFL, we didn't take the NFL Networks and the ESPNs of the world by storm, no we didn't just do those things. That win over the Patriots gave us this one thing we haven't had in a long time:
Hope.
We saw it in Ronnie Brown's smile during the downpour with San Diego. We saw it in a painful, losing effort against Houston. We saw it in the eyes of Joey Porter, a washed up Pittsburgh system linebacker, as he dominated Trent Edwards for a game-changing safety against Buffalo. We saw it in the hands of Will Allen, normally criticized for having bricks, as he juked out Jay Cutler to walk into the endzone in Denver. We saw it in the speed of Ricky Williams, an over-the-hill marijuana-smoking team cancer, as he sprinted untouched leaving Seattle defenders in the dust. We saw it in the leg of Dan Carpenter, an undrafted rookie nobody replacing a proven Jay Feely, when he kicked it right down the middle in order to rally over the Raiders.
Now as the minutes count down to kickoff to the game tomorrow, ask yourself: Do you feel hopeful?
We're not completely in the clear with a victory. We need another rag-tag team in the Tennessee Titans to beat the New York Bretts tomorrow.
I'm not good with pep rallies and speeches, but for once in my tenure of being a Dolphins fan, I do not dread game day. I know this team can do this, because they believe that they can.
