There are two stats that stand out for me on this team:
(1) Dolphins are tied in 5th for point differential with a +60 point differential (http://espn.go.com/nfl/standings). We were -2 all of last year and were -1 going into the bye week this year.
(2) Dolphins are tied for 3rd in turnover differential at +8 (http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/givetake/position/defense). The team only had 24 takeaways all of last year, this year we already have 18 takeaways. They had 26 giveaways last year, this year they have 10 giveaways. (http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-takeaway-giveaway-statistics/2013/).
The point differential stat does not necessarily correlate to more wins (we were +23 going into this week), but the turnover differential is a huge factor in determining wins. Point differential fluctuates dramatically per week, but +60 is very disparate, which is great. We have 10 takeaways the past 3 games. In my preseason write up the two main factors were getting more takeaways and scoring more than getting scored on. The two most utterly common sense stats. They have to keep this pace up.
There are also a number of individual players that are near the top of stat charts that deserve some recognition. Grimes tied in 2nd with 4 picks. Lamar Miller 10th in rushing yards with 518, 11th in yards per attempt with 4.9 YPA, 4th in 20+ yard runs with 5, and 6th in TDs with 5. Jarvis Landry 4th in kick return yards, and 3rd in return average. Tannehill has over a 90 QB rating and is continuing to go up and is also 12th in TD passes. Not great but certainly a step forward from last year and in the top half of the league.
I will keep my healthy skepticism going into this Detroit game, but holy hell am I excited to see what they will do against the top defense in the league. My halfway point analysis is that this version of this team is starting to learn from their mistakes and are adjusting on the fly. That's a huge step forward. Keep the pace up.
