In my opinion, the Dolphins have only two options for their first four draft picks (#1, #32, #57, #64), assuming no additional picks are traded for.

Option 1
1) C. Long/Gholston (OLB/DE)
32) OT
57) CB
64) WR/TE

Option 2
1) Jake Long
32) CB
57) LB/WR
64) WR/TE/LB

I believe Chris Long and Jake Long are the top two choices for the organization right now, based on need and talent. Matt Ryan may turn out to be a franchise QB, but the Fins seem to be willing to give Beck more time. Also, there's the theory that Ryan is rated highly because he's the top QB in a weak class, while QB talent is more prevalent in the next few upcoming drafts.

That being said, there are four main areas of need at this time. After switching to a 3-4 D, the Dolphins lack depth at the DE and LB positions. DT was previously a problem, but due to trades and FA has been fulfilled at least for this year. DE also may be set depending on where Jason Taylor plays and the acquistion of Randy Starks. The LB positions seem to need the most addressing, especially with run defense. If we look to fill these positions with the #1 pick, our only options seem to be Chris Long and Vernon Gholston. Both of these players should be able to make a major impact on our D. Since the offensive line and cornerback positions are also major needs, these should be addressed with the next two picks. It is a strong class for both, but first class OTs may have run out by the time we get to our #57 pick, which is why we should target that position first. CB is taken care of next, and our #64 fills the last position of need, WR or TE. Whichever QB we have starting our season will need more targets than the Fins currently have, and we should be able to find major talent still at this point.

If we choose Jake Long with the #1 pick, our OT need is taken care of, leaving CB as our next highest position of need. There should be a few first class CBs available at pick #32, giving us a first round talent. With our next two picks, the Fins should expect to target a LB with pick #57, unless a 1st or early 2nd round talent WR has dropped. The third round pick should be used on either a LB or WR, whichever wasn't the #57 pick, unless a 1st or early 2nd round talent TE is available.

Sorry if any of this is confusing, I'm trying to put my thoughts in writing and sometimes that can be problematic. I think this would be a fantastic gameplan for the draft, if nothing happens in FA to change team needs. I would love to hear your feedback, thanks for reading!

#2 please. LT and CB are two of the tougher positions to fill in free agency (QB being another, but I think Beck takes care of that). Let's take care of both with our first two picks.

3-4 OLB is also tuff to fill in free agency. Hence Pace getting 22 million guaranteed. T and CB are two of the deepest positions in the draft. I choose 1.

I think this captures the dilemma at #1. If we pick C Long, we really HAVE to go best OT at 2a. The draft is deep in OT, but there could easily be a run on them late in the 1st round. If we go J Long, it's easier to pick the best 1st rounder who falls (could be LB, CB, etc). I vote #2.

Definitely #2. We then have options at #32.

Supposs we take C. Long at #1. At #32 we almost have to take a T. Even though there may be a CB, WR thats drops. We are almost already commited. Now when we take J. Long, we now have a lot of flexiblity as to what direction to take with #32 and #57.

Just to piggyback on this.

Look at how much the LT's got in free agency this year. Oh wait there weren't any. Teams that draft a LT don't let them go.
We have one shot at this. Cause I can tell you I sure as heck don't want to be drafting in the top 10 again.

So it seems that there is quite a bit of agreement that these may be our best options?

Spegg and Marino420TD, excellent comments about how if we took Chris Long at #1, we would be stuck with a OT at #32, even if a player drops. We easily should be able to get a first round talent there (since it's technically a first round pick).

I'm definitely a supporter of taking Chris Long at 1, but i can totally see what your saying with having more options at #32 if we take Jake at 1. Because we ABSOLUTELY need to take a LT with one of first 2 picks and if we dont we're not going to get that franchise corner stone on the end of the line that we need.

Thanks for the great feedback everybody, any more thoughts out there?

Well I see us going with option #1 because of the difficulty of trading the pick and Parcells likes to pick his defense in the first roung

For Miami right now and what they need, Option #2 looks like the better of the two, But don't count out Parcells taking Vernon Gholston with the top pick. Also I like Jake Long as well, but remember some of the OT flops lately that have been picked #1 or at the top of the 1st round (ie; Robert Gallery), some of the better OL in the NFL have been lower round draft picks.

You hit the nail on the head. At #32, we have a fantastic chance to get real value by drafting someone that slid out of the first round. Why pigeon hole ourselves by taking someone other than Jake Long #1, and then having to draft OT at #32.

I would be livid if one of the elite CBs (Cason or Flowers) or Branden Albert fell and we had to draft OT for fear there wouldn't be a starting caliber OT left at #57. The bottom line is that nobody in this draft is worth #1 money, so we may as well fill a pressing need with the pick.

I'd like a #2 please with a side order of fries ... oh and supersize this for me will ya, Parcells likes em supersized. Thanks.
