Sad story
HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) -- Jason Ray, the North Carolina student who performed as a mascot for the school's basketball team, died three days after he was struck by a car hours before an NCAA tournament game. He was 21.
Ray died Monday morning, said Steve Kirschner, the university's associate athletic director for communications.
Ray had been in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center since the accident Friday afternoon. He was hit from behind while walking on a highway shoulder near his hotel in Fort Lee after going to a nearby convenience store.

He was an organ donor too so he probably will help save a few lives.

I know the cop that was on the scene.

1. For those that don't know the area, RT 4 in Fort Lee is the main Highway coming off and onto the GW bridge, its dam busy.

2. The poor kid must not have realized the insane drivers of the NY, NJ area, they will fly down the shoulder if it saves them 10 seconds. You just don't walk on the shoulders in that area.

3. Yes, the guy was flying down the shoulder to pass cars in traffic and hit the poor kid.

4. To the guys credit (I guess you can call it that) he stopped and called for help and tried to help the kid.

I really feel for the kids parents, he was on life support until they got here so they could say goodbye and pull the plug. I just can't imangine having to do that to one of my kids.:boohoo:

This is very sad... R.I.P. young man...:(

who parks on the shoulder to walk to a convenience store? why not use the parking lot?

:( I hope the driver gets a lot of jail time over this.

I never ever walk with my back to traffic....I go to the other side of the street so I can see traffic coming my way (if there is no sidewalk to walk on).

Why should the driver get jail time for this? He wasn't drunk or under the influence of any illegal drugs, he had a valid license and the car was insured, it was late, he stopped and called the cops and even tried to help the kid, and he's owned up to it. IMO it's a terrible accident that sadly happened but I don't think this guy deserves jail time. Having that on his conscious for the rest of his life is punishment enough!

yeah i don't think any punishment is really necessary. purely an accident. he'll have a tough time living with the death as it is... :(
