My thread got lost due to the server downtime but I just wanted to give you guys an update on my friend. Yesterday, he finally woke up and started responding to the ****tail of medications they had given him. Apparently however he is still very frail and weak and could not move at all w/out nurse aid. He has a long road to recovery and is still not totally out of the woods as of yet but he is alive! I just wanted to thank everyone for their continued prayers for him and his family.

Jason (In_Flames)

Thank goodness he woke up and is starting to be aware of his surroundings Jason. We will continue to pray for him and his family and please keep us updated on his progress.

With all due respect Jason, remind us of what your friend went through..

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that I don't recall seeing anything on your friend Flames.

I'm VERY happy to hear that he is showing some good signs of recovery though bro!

Thoughts and prayers with him.

No problem at all man. Late last week we got a call that one of our good friends was rushed to the emergency room barely conscious. It was later determined that he had been exposed to the MRSA virus/infection. He is a fire marshall and volunteer EMT so he honestly could have picked it up anywhere given it's contagious nature. Anyway, over the weekend he had taken a turn for the worse, was unresponsive and later fell unconscious. This was only the second case of MRSA we had in the area recently, the first was a teenage boy who eventually passed away, and they thought our friend could be heading that way as well. So that brings us back to today, like I said he's still not totally in the clear but hopes are high that he will eventually recover and live, but no one knows for sure how badly internally his body was effected, so only time will tell of the true damage done.

Thanks again guys.

yeah yeah...now I remember the thread. Surprised it was lost.

GREAT NEWS bro.. Will send some good Desert karma your friends way. I have a good friend who's teenage daughter lost a friend from high school here from that (Confusing enough?). Blew me away hearing about how common it actually is...

I'm sorry for your friend Jason. I hope that he recovers quickly and completely.

Just a note: MRSA is a bacterial infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus and happens when the organism becomes resistant to methicillin, a strong antibiotic.

Damn MRSA eh? That is a *****, my wife and I am sure Greg's has to get suited up when they have MRSA patients on her floor as it is so contagious . I am so glad that your friend seems to be recivering and yes he does have a long way to go but thankfully it seems as if he will get there.

Postnote, when you first said lost thread, I thought it was from the Aug crash and I was like damn the poor bugger has been out for awhile, glad to hear he was out for only a few days.

Is it true that it is actually imune to almost any antibotic?

The case I was hearing was this, and the only real way to save somebody is to get it early on and completly flush the system non-stop via Intravenious liquids?

I will sit back and listen now

Hi Kenny. I know that a little boy in Megs' school died from it. The school sent home a letter about it. It's SO contagious. I've been having Meghan wash her hands all the way up to her elbows like a surgeon, ALOT!

Methicillin is last line antibiotic in the same family as penicillin, Flucloxacillin, Ampicillin (all the "cillins") and works by destroying the bond between the cell wall subunits in Gram negative bacteria. Some bacteria have evolved a defense that breaks the antiobiotic molecule in two pieces at the center (beta lactam) ring. Most organisms have not figured out how to get to the beta-lactam ring in methicillin but Methicillin Resistant Staph. Aureus (M.R.S.A.) has done it.

There are other antibiotics that work via other mechanisms like inhibiting protein synthesis in the organism but nothing is as effective as poking holes in the organism like the beta-lactams do.

Good news, and I hope he recovers quickly. I'm not currently coaching, but I know that the schools are attempting to address preventing this infection. I spent most of the fall ill--I had strep throat three times in four months, but I am fortunate that medication worked. The doctor told me if I get it again anytime soon, I have to take a leave of absence from work, so I had to quit going to the gym until my immune system builds back up, and I have to disinfect my classroom.

I am glad your friend is apparently otherwise healthy; I'm sure that's aiding his potential recovery. I hope it's a complete and quick one.

There are some big gun antibiotics that can take care of the infection. Sometimes, you have to use combination therapy if the patient becomes septic from the infection.

Vancomycin is probably the most used. There are other big guns though like linezolid and tigecycline

If it is a simple skin infection, which is how MRSA starts, then Bactrim can treat it. Bactrim is a combination drug that has sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim as the active meds. It's a sulfa drug though, and there are a lot of allergies to sulfa drugs.
