Miami picks

Marcus Peters CB, Washington- Cortland Finnegan hasn't been terrible this year, but the fact that the Dolphins are using him is a sign that they need corner help. Besides, Miami is taking one of the top players on the board at this juncture.

Jaquiski Tartt S, Samford- Both Louis Delmas and Jimmy Wilson will be impending free agents this upcoming offseason, and all the Dolphins have waiting in the wings is 2014 fourth-rounder Walt Aikens. Miami will have to get younger and better at the safety position.

Gabe Wright DT, Auburn-Jared Odrick has played so well this year that he'll command lots of money in free agency this upcoming spring. The Dolphins may have to find a new defensive tackle as a consequence.

For once very little snark towards us

I can see CB as a spot we may address in the draft. Will Davis seems to have fallen off...Jamar Taylor is getting play time by default and for as little play time he gets he commits a lot of penalties and Finnegan has been...meh. We only have 4 CBs. We may be able to address the depth with a mid-tier free agent next year though.

when i see nick oleary in the top 35 of the draft that kinda tells me it's not a very quality one...not that oleary isn't a solid player but he's got no business going in the top 50...tight end class must be really lacking

There's some great talent at the TE position, the draft publications just haven't caught up yet for a few reasons.

1. They haven't properly identified and evaluated the underclassman TE talent yet. In my opinion, Juniors like Maxx Williams and Pharoah Brown are high caliber NFL talents. The general scouting community hasn't caught up quite yet, but I'm pretty sure scouts have.

2. There's kids out there among the Senior class like A.J. Derby that they're behind on as well. However, it's understandable why. He's been playing quarterback at Iowa and Arkansas before finally making the move to TE this season. All you have to do is watch him play. It should be fairly self explanatory.

Pharaoh Brown is athletic as hell but the kid is a knucklehead that will make him drop. Maxx Williams is good.

Yeah, but the NFL loves knuckleheads if you can play. It's full of 'em.

That catch and run by Derby vs. Alabama on that crosser was very impressive. That put him on my radar.

When it comes to TEs, I'm surprised at the lack of attention Clive Walford is receiving. He had some issues with blocking and drops as an underclassman, but he's only dropped one ball as a Senior that I recall, and his blocking is much improved. IMHO he has the bulk to play inside and is more than willing to do so, but still has enough wiggle and speed (in the 4.6 range) to get down the field and get open. He's been as productive as Nick O'Leary his whole career, and is having a very good senior campaign.

Edit: Newspaper reports always had him in the 4.6 40 range, but his practice times appear to be around 4.8 in the 40. Would explain why he's not more highly touted.

Walford's having a nice season...but like you said, not sure he runs very fast. His play speed would make me think he runs closer to 4.8 than 4.6. I think he'll be a nice #2 TE somewhere in the NFL.

There's really not a lot separating O'Leary and Walford. They've essentially been the same player their entire careers. I gave O'Leary a slight edge prior to the season becasue he's more consistent. Whereas Walford is a better seam threat.

Secondly, 4.8 is plenty good for a TE be a great player in the NFL if you're smooth, can change directions, catch the football, and have a little bit of athleticism. Tony Gonzalez was a 4.8 player. Jace Amaro probably ran mid 4.7's. The undrafted kid Donnell for the Giants ran a 4.91. You can play a long time in the NFL at TE with 4.8 speed. It's about average for a TE with any legitimate size to 'em.

The Justin Tukes kid for UCF just quietly goes about his business every Saturday blocking for that offense in between sneaking a few catches here and there, but his blocking is really good. He'll stick on a roster somewhere.

If you go back and watch the UCF/Louisville game from last year, Calvin Pryor almost killed J.J. Worton at the beginning of the game with a devastating hit. A couple of series later Pryor got a taste of Justin Tukes' wrath.... he didn't like it.

I will say this after watching O'Leary vs. Notre Dame. IMHO he isn't much if any quicker than Walford. I really don't think Walford plays slow. He just isn't a burner, especially in the 40, but I've always felt with the pads on he had plus speed for a TE. I know that most Canes fans don't echo that sentiment though.

i like walford personally...he's a pro...i like his pro game more than olearys...i guess my guy jake mcgee fell off the map at florida

McGee didn't fall off the map he just broke his leg in the season opener for Florida. I don't know if he applied for a medical RS or not but I know he's eligible. He needs to just enter the draft in my opinion.

They don't have a quarterback down there and will be bringing in a new coach next year anyway.
