Vernon Carey Moving to LT

I like Ole Carey at left tackle, although there is going to be one hell of a training camp battle at the other positions being that there is a log jam at guard. I hope Rosenthal can win the rt spot

Linking to my blog, because I don't know if you have seen this yet.

(And because I don't mind the hits.)

I think Vernon is ready now to play LT. He clearly wasn't the first couple years. Not a bad move most likely.

But Ethan ... please help us understand this maddness. Why is Quinn not a Dolphin??? Why!!!!

Yea lets move a solid RT to a position he hardly ever played anywhere and so we all know Alabi is officially mediocre. Not really good news to me.

Dude...Im too buzzed right now...but if you look through my threads youll see that I have posted the same thing about a month ago...One of my better posts if I do say so my self..

This is fairly big news that will likely get lost in the shuffle of today's events. I think think Carey can handle LT, but what does that do for our right side? I imagine with that LJ moves to RT and we let the interior linemen fight it out for jobs.

Carey moving to LT tells me that Randy and Cam are less than impressed with Alabi. Which, all along, I felt that Alabi was being overrated and that he wasn't going to be the difference maker at LT. This hurt the right side of the line because Carey and Shelton had formed a very good tandem on that side. However if Carey is our best tackle he has to go to the LT position. Even though in the past he has struggled there. Hopefully we're still targeting a player on day 2 that can play the Tackle and Guard position. I wouldn't be opposed to Doug Free at 71.

I think that Carey makes a serviceable LT but hardly a good one because he played guard in college. You seldom see college guards move out to left tackle because it requires so much speed and quick footwork. You frequently see the opposite: a good left tackle in college moves inside to guard in the pros. The best college non-tackle position to yield possible left tackles: TE. I think moving Carey to LT is a stop gap measure pending the development of either Alabi or another youngster from day 2.

Any Day 2 tackles -- or any lineman -- taken are going to be projects who take a year, maybe two or three to be ready to play as starters. The Fins might also take a big TE in the 7th or even sign one as a FA to find a good LT (the Bills signed Jason Peters as a UFA as a TE -- he wasn't much of a TE, but he sparkles as a LT!).

I think that maybe the Fins' plans were disrupted when not only Joe Thomas but also Levi Brown were gone by #9. Then Staley got snapped up before the Fins chose in the second (might have been late first). In a way, I'm not surprised because with the dearth of good linemen, especially at LT, coming out of college, the relatively few good ones get picked up fast.
