Very interesting stuff from the Athletic

Look at all the kids from small schools in that redo. Those guys get discovered more now imo.

At the same time there aren’t many drafts that have that kind of from a small school impact.

Zabel probably does go to the combine more I think about it but I seriously doubt he gets a senior bowl invite.

Throw in NIL money has lead to colleges scouting other colleges leading to more discovery as well transfer portal changes has lead to more talented players changing schools. Believe in 2006 they had to sit out a season after transferring which lead to way less transfers.

Any draft that has cb Brent grimes in the first round in a redo is an exception.

Way I see it.

In a case like Grant when he's available to extend he'll only be 25 years old meaning he's probably about to peak physically within the next couple of years, especially when it comes to strength. You cannot wait to extend him, you have to pay right away.
Agree if he is as good as the optimistic projections he'll be one to extend before getting into the 5th year.

I don't see Grant trying to fill the Christian Wilkins role.

Weaver didn't coach Wilkins, and he brought his scheme here. Grant will fill the Michael Pierce role except he can provide more potential pass rush.

He's not here for your vision, he's here for Weaver's proven scheme.
And he will be another player that defenses need to account for on every play. We need those guys, especially if they get us closer to the holy grail of an effective 4-man rush, leaving the other 7 to shut down passing lanes and take advantage of missed blocks.

Hitting on 2 picks is like a bonanza for us but it's not enough given what we had to work with and what the competition did. we have such low expectations for this team and it's allowing the big 3 that run this club to get away with murder.

Just got this sick feeling about 12:30 pm last Saturday that this s a GM who continues to waste opps to make this a better roster.

When Grier traded away 116 this year my friend asked me if Grier was trying to get fired. He said you have 2 draft picks made and 5-6 more giant holes and he's doing that? He's right and I can't quantify this but Grier appears to be getting worse at his job
But we do get a better player next year (in theory). We need not just more players but better players. It helps me to think that this is a soft rebuild, with an entertaining and steadily improving product on field. I think the improvements have been both under and over sold but they are still improvements at important areas of need. How much improvement we will see.

That's a fair point, although I think if you watched Manning relieve Ewers he looked more than capable and in some instances an upgrade.

It may have to do with family name, but if I'm not mistaken many fans were clamouring to see more of Manning.
Also the Mannings may have been ok with Arch sitting a bit more, learning, not getting hurt and not putting as many rough reps on tape.

It wasn’t just the 116 pick. We managed to not use the 98, 116, and 135 picks
Don't forget the Texans 3rd next year, which will be an earlier pick than any of those.

for months the media yelled: "DOLPHINS NEED TO BUILD THE TRENCHES!!"

The Dolphins then build the trenches and the media says:

"NO YOU SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED SECONDARY!!!!"

It's just an agenda, nothing more

Months? It’s been years they’ve called Miami weak and small lol now all of a sudden maybe the most weakest and smallest position on either side, cornerback is all of a sudden the staple of the nfl 🤣

Seriously, you think we have a good team? You think we are getting better?

Better than last year? Yes. A contender? Still no but it was asking the impossible for a one offseason to fix both lines and the secondary. I’m now comfortable with the dline and starting oline. Still would like some additional depth on the oline but like the starting unit.

I read a CBS Sportsline that gave us a C-
Don't love draft grades, per se. But you can question or grade a front offices' approach and for me, Grier gets a D on this one.

Jason Marshall shouldn't be your first, and only attempt to improve the CB room through the draft. You shouldn't tell your fanbase that this draft class of corners is deep and then come away with very little at that position after the draft.

Bad time to be a Fins fan because we are a rudderless mess
Trenches were screaming "Pick me". I can understand going 1st on an OG, but Grant should be a good DT, although I would have gone DT in the 2nd. A better DLine this season with draftees and our 2 Edges back, DLine should mask some of the DB's problems. I will trust in Weaver to develop what he has. Those trenches needed shoring up 1st though. Can go DB's next year. (Want to see if Trader ends up with substantial playing time.)

Those trenches were only screaming it because of their own draft and financial decisions mismanagement.

All comes back to the personnel department.

True, but it is what it is.

Given the decisions already made this off-season, what was the alternative?

Wilkins was never dominant. He’s never eclipsed double digit sacks and the one year he got close he just beat up on some of the worst lines in football collecting 6 sacks in 4 games vs NE/NYJ and Carolina. He also didn’t come along and break out until Sieler came along which makes me question if it was even him or if he was benefiting off Sieler. Sieler did 10 sacks again this year without him so I don’t need to ask if sieler was benefiting off him as he had very little help this year without both our edges gone and just a rookie chop. Campbell was good but our rush was about as weak as it gets and Sieler still dominated. Sieler almost has more sacks in the last 2 years (20) as Wilkins has in his 6 year career (22.5). We got the better DT for 1/3rd the price. Not to mention you can’t come into the league as an older player like he did at 24 and take 3 years to “hit your stride” totally defeats the purpose of drafting an older player like him who supposed to be more polished. He was solid but very overrated.
All very solid points.
