Fred Smoot stalked off the practice field, tossed his helmet angrily and kicked a blocking pad in disgust.

The fast-talking Minnesota Vikings cornerback had just given up a long pass completion to Marcus Robinson during a developmental camp scrimmage against the offense, and Smoot made no secret of his displeasure.

Somewhere on the field, defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was smiling.

"That's a beautiful thing to see," Cottrell said. "These guys don't ever want to let a receiver catch a pass, whether it's in these developmental camps or in a game."

That kind of attitude has long been missing from a Vikings defense that has been among the worst in the league for years.

Thanks to the addition of a bevy of experienced and talented veteran free agents, and a little continuity with Cottrell's system, that appears to be changing.

The Vikes have had some nice additions to their D, if their offense stays formidable without Moss, they will be a threat in the NFC.

I think the Vikes are a serious contender for the NFC crown, especially if it is as weak as last year. They have a great offense (although losing Moss hurts) and now their defense should be able to play ball too. Their a Super Bowl contender in my mind.
