Noone can dispute that Tannehill has been below average when it's come to deep passes during his NFL career, however this notion that he is stuck in a "20 yard box" is nonsense and let me show you why... You see, unlike Pennington and Fiedler who were physically limited QBs, Tannehill actually has a very powerful arm. There was one throw from last year that really emphasizes this.

A hail mary heave against the Panthers in 2013.

Tannehill begins his throw from his own 31 yard line:

Tannehill completes his throwing motion from his own 32 WHILE getting HIT:

The ball is nearly perfectly placed to Wallace at the the opposing 5 yard line:

Wallace actually appears to have the ball in his hands at the 4 yard line:

Wallace is unable to complete the catch and it falls incomplete at the 1 yard line:

This ball traveled nearly 70 YARDS in the AIR with immense pressure in his face! He was hit a split second after releasing the ball. Not only did it travel far, it HIT THE WR IN THE HANDS!

This was an amazing play and my mouth was agape after witnessing it, but I think it got lost in the disappointment of the loss at the time. To be fair to Wallace, it was a tough catch, but if he somehow managed to hang on to it and roll into the endzone for the winning TD, this would have been one of the most miraculous plays in Dolphins history.

So the next time someone says Tannehill will never be able to develop his deep ball game, just think of this play... He isn't physically incapable of doing it! He might just need the practice to get the timing down. Yes, it's taking a frustratingly long time to develop, but unlike with Fiedler or Pennington, it isn't ludicrous to believe that it may eventually develop...

Thanks man. Now wait for the haters, although they've been quiet lately

Wow he does have a rocket! Thanks for the breakdown

Who ever questioned his arm strength? He has a very strong arm. But he lacks touch. Can touch be coached? I hope so b/c the kid is statistically the most inaccurate deep ball passer in the NFL. If not last close to it. His arm strength is what makes the struggles with the deep ball so frustrating and confusing. It's not a physical limitation. Is it a mental one? Is it just a lack of natural ability to place it where it needs to be? I don't get it. And so far not even Lazor has been able to solve the puzzle.

Had Wallace caught it he would've been down at the 1 as time expired and everyone would bitch Tannehill out for not having better arm strength :chuckle:

D. Thomas would have caught it. That is exactly the play we are talking about a big WR can go up and get it. That's what we need

I'm with you, it is frustrating. All I am saying is that since it's not a physical limitation, he has the ability to eventually add this to his game. Guys like Big O are obsessing about him playing in a "20 yard box" as if its something that can never be corrected. If he has the arm strength to make a 70 yard pass under pressure, he IS capable of eventually throwing completed deep balls with some reasonable level of consistency...

He doesn't lack touch, he lacks timing.

My understanding of the "20 yard box" has nothing to do with his arm strength. IMO no one is disputing he has the arm strength to make all the throws including the deep ball. The "20 yard box" label is referring to his ability to be accurate on his throws. His accuracy drops dramatically beyond 20 yards and we all know how bad his deep ball to Wallace is. I'm a fan of his and hope he gets so much better beyond the "20 yard box."

If he is accurate on short and intermediate routes, how is it that he would be incapable of developing reasonable levels of accuracy downfield? It isn't a physical limitation, so then how can someone already make the determination that he can never be accurate with it, especially considering he is plenty accurate at other distances? The go route issue appears to be about timing to me... He has a tough time gauging Wallace's downfield speed, partly because Wallace tends to slow up or speed up inconsistently IMO. I'm not pinning it on Wallace, but I do believe he is part of the problem with their chemistry as well. I've seen several times where it appears they could connect but Wallace slows himself down while trying to locate the ball and the ball ends up overthrown...

I think we are all a fan of his (well most of us) and we all have seen his growth this season in just about every area except the passes past 20 yards. Wallace said recently they hit at least two deep passes a practice, but it just hasn't translated into the field. And despite Wallace not being a big possession guy he has gotten past the safety several times in a phins uniform and Tannehill has missed him in stride. Together they've left a good 5-8 deep TD's on the field. I hope Lazor can help Ryan figure it out this touch or timing problem.

Was at that Game against Carolina last year, couldn't believe my eyes, the first thing I said was Holy Sh*t that was 70 yards
