Volin: Ryan Tannehill continues to impress

You realize you can lean out and still put on muscle right?

For Smith, putting on muscle would be good for him. He was very soft prior to this offseason.

yes i'm aware of that but muscle weighs more than fat...not like the kid had any fat on him anyways...so if you're losing 17 lbs i'm thinking thats taking away from the muscle you do have given his body type to begin with...

the last thing sean smith needs is to be rocked up and less flexible than he was even last year at that size...it's not like the guys ever gonna be a tackler anyways...

See you're jumping to the extreme. I never said anything about being "rocked up". That would be extreme. The kid was very soft for a lanky guy. He needed to add the muscle for durability purposes, not to mention strengthen his tackling. He can still maintain flexibility, as we're not talking about bulking up to compete for Mr. Universe.

well it appears that face value may have been the correct way to go on the marshall taking snaps from vontae thing...i hardly ever take anything at face value ha ha...

I asked Omar about VD. He has been producing besides Nanee scoring on him yesterday he's been great.

So, you never told us the answer. What did Omar say was his favorite Herpes medication??

I saw this earlier on Twitter.

Ben Volin has been the most staunch supporter of Matt Moore throughout the off season. I don't blame him. Volin doesn't pretend to be an evaluator so he's not going to get all cute about this guy or that. Objectively you look at the facts and they are what they are. Matt Moore had like a 98 passer rating during the final 9 games of the season and led the team to a 6-3 record. And they didn't just eek out victories as was all too common in the Sparano era...they put away games against lesser opponents and hung tough with tough opponents (like the Super Bowl champion Giants). Then you've got all these league coaches and general managers all saying the same thing, Dolphins have a good quarterback in Matt Moore, they're all interested in seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes there. Have I disagreed? Sure. But those are the objective facts and evidence to go on, if you're a reporter.

For even Ben to end up having to tweet out (paraphrased) "It's hard not to notice that Garrard throws with better velocity and accuracy than Matt Moore"...to me that's a sign that there isn't just some weird media craziness going on, David Garrard really is winning this competition.
Garrard, at least I believe, was Philibin's choice to sign so this makes sense. I think Moore has a lot of potential, but he is up and down and doesn't practice well. I think his advantage is big plays and that has to be considered. With Garrard you get more accuracy and more mobility which fits the west coast offense.

coyle said misis playing the sam i'll take it that he's calling it right that makes a lot more sense to me burnett must be the will...jimmy wilson and reshad jones should provide some instincts and ball skills at safety for the first time in a while...gotta wonder if wilson can hold up in the box though...he's physical and all and willing as a tackler but thats gonna be a different animal...

chris clemons better not come up lame anymore or they may decide to move on...seems to me culver is a lock...4th safety up for grabs

Wilson has put on a lot of muscle in the offseason, I think he's a guy that will be an able tackler. What surprises me most is that they've left Reshad at FS and others at SS. I think Jimmy's play at corner should help his coverage ability, as a FS ya know. I assume he's a little quicker than Jones too

I'm really starting to warm up to Ryan. I just hope he remains poised to get better and isn't content with where he's at.

yeah i know he put on muscle on that 5 ft 10 frame and he's a physical player and willing but you don't know just how willing a guy is until he comes up in the box and has to take on a downhill 235 lb back with a full head of steam and nothing but high knees and pads coming straight at you...i haven't seen anything yet though that says to me he won't put his body on the line like i've seen from others but til you see it it's gonna be a question mark...all that said i like his instincts his feel for the passing game his physical nature and ball skills enough that i'd roll the dice...as for straight line speed he probably is faster i'd say than reshad jones not that wilson struck me as a burner at cb but i don't know that he has jones short area quick acceleration...jones accelerates from zero to top speed in a hurry...i really like that especially at safety...quick acceleration

i'd have wilson at free and jones at strong...jones has no problem laying the wood...corner converts to strong safety seems ambitious to me

Sorry the accuracy may prove to be better, but Moore effectively rolled out and ran boot legs last year. That is not a weakness in his game.

I concur with everything you said hoops. It will be a much different thing tackling a big rb vs a small wr. I can't wait for the preseason to start so we can get a taste of the team.

thinking about it though didn't chric crocker play strong safety in cinci for coyle??? i seem to recall that...if so i don't see why jimmy wilson can't be that same kind of physical player maybe moreso in that regard even for us

not that chris crocker does much for me...guy was dreadful in the cinci postseason game last year...

I have a tendency to doubt the idea that they're going to have Vontae be the slot guy instead of Marshall. The slot is known as something of a specialty for Marshall, and it's why he is here. The Dolphins needed a slot corner with the departure of Will Allen (who I thought did a great job in 2011, underrated).

The reports we've hard haven't (to my understanding) noted that Marshall is out on the perimeter while Vontae is moving inward to the slot. They've just been Marshall hawking reps from Vontae. And again I'd take that at face value, with Vontae either a little banged up and needing some breaks, or the Dolphins thinking about rotating the two a little especially based on individual game matchups.

At some point you could see Vontae start to get some work in the slot but I would consider that nothing more than preparation for eventualities. We should have more than one corner who is capable of playing the slot. If Nolan Carroll/Jonathan Wade/Quinten Lawrence/Vince Agnew can't do that then either Vontae or Sean better be able to and I'd rather Vontae than Sean, unless it's a tight end.

Coyle put Omar back in his box at the presser yesterday, when Omar stated to Coyle that there was only one open position on the defense. Coyle laughed at him and said he runs a number of packages and, as such, has about 15 or 16 players that he considers his starters. It could just be that Marshall is slated to take a few snaps on the boundary in certain looks.

It could also be Coyle's way of letting one of the marquee players on the D that nobody is an automatic starter.
