I recently came accross this article on another fin fan website
http://www.thephinsider.com/2010/1/17/1255080/vontae-davis-common-misconceptions#storyjump

inside this article it shows what one fan interperates vontae davis's play.

I like the way he shows stats and shows some key arguements but, I totally disagree with this..

Sean Smith will be better pass defender..

Why is that? What has Sean Smith proved to show that as a fact? Is it the fact that he had less turnovers? The fact that he wasn't put on the likes of Randy Moss, T.O., and all other elite recievers we've played? I mean, Sean Smith has some rare abilities. He has great hands, and he has a crazy height advantage. The difference is that Vontae Davis has ELITE closing speed.

I remember talking to a friend (jets friend) about how Vontae reminds me of Darrell Revis. They are identical in almost all physical qualities. They have the same playing style. At this point in each one of their careers I believe Revis is much better in pass defense but, Vontae is far superior in run defense.

I honestly believe that Vontae Davis is going to be something special. He is the ideal physical SHUT-DOWN corner. He is going to be great! And, He will not only go to a probowl in his future but numerous probowls!

I think Smith actually had more passes defended. And Smith didn't go against the #1s because the O.Coordinators were obviously trying to create mismatches. A lot of those blew up in their faces though, thanks to Vontae's flashes of greatness.

There's no reason to believe that both of these guys can't be great. It's not like Sean Smith will suck because Vontae is the one who's going to be great. That doesn't make any sense.

I never said he would suck but, Sean Smith didn't make any game changing plays. Vontae was the guy that was dominating the second half of the texans game, and vontae was the guy that intercepted tom brady twice!

so a guy intercepts a pass from Brady and he's a superstar?

That was a terrible pass.

how many int's did sean smith have?
When teams throw at one guy significantly more than another guy, the guy who gets thrown at more tends to get more interceptions. The guy thrown at less often tends to get less. For an example, see Nnamdi Asomugha.

All I have to say is Andre Johnson had 3 catches on Sean Smith. 2 in the first half, and 1 in the 2nd. His TD came when Nate Jones was covering him. Outstanding for a rookie.

I think we should focus on the fact that both Smith and Davis show real potential in becoming a top cornerback pairing, rather than playing one off against the other. Statistics can be misleading, offences try to create mismatches, and our DC didn't help in avoiding those mismatches for much of the season. What is clear is they have different tools, different strengths, Smith needs to bulk up in the offseason, Davis needs to work on his footowork and fundamentals, but all in all they rooks did pretty well considering, and should come on in leaps and bounds next year.

Remember when Andre Goodman was getting lots of interceptions but getting a PI penalty and/or a long bomb TD given up nearly every game?

Remember everyone thought he was our best cornerback?

Ya... I actually like both our corners but just because Davis made some (nice) interceptions does not *necessarily* mean he played better or is better.

ss needs to work on that body of his and put some meat on them bones. And he needs to work on his tackling!. I am happy with both corners. They both can work great together.

I mean Davis is the better CB, that is clear.

Sean maybe better man to man, that is debatable . . . but Davis has the better ball skills, is the better athlete, is by far and away the better tackler and is solid in man coverage as well.

The Front office picked up 2 real good CB's last year, let's hope they can add atleast 2 real good LB's this year.

1 stat of a million.

It's like LT . . . everybody was like . . . oohhh Clady is the better LT because he gave up .5 sacks compared to Jake's 2.5 last year, or whatever the number was. But Jake was CLEARLY better in the run game. Does 2 less sacks given up make u the better LT? No, because there is more to being a LT than pass pro.

Just because Sean didn't get burned as much on paper . . . doesn't mean he was better. Sean has HORRIBLE tackling form, something he needs to really work on this offseason by bulking up and coaching. Davis just needs to keep working with coaches and getting better. He has the perfect size, speed and ball skills to be a great CB in this league.
