From the dolphins insider, a fan asked Saban the question regarding who is responsible for the playcalling on defense and Saban said that Will Mushamp was the one calling the plays with Richard's Smith's input.
In Saban's own words, R. Smith is mostly used in game planning against other teams, he also has a lot of inputs on the game plan, and he sometimes calls the plays on short yardage situations.
But Willy Mushamp is the virtual defensive coordinator.

I could have told you that the minute Muschamp took the job to come to the Fins.

He is Saban's right hand man, and quite frankly, he doesn't get enought credit. He was kick-@ss at LSU.

Was there ever any truth to the story that Muschamp called a Dolphins staff member before Saban was even hired and acted as if he already worked there? That seemed pretty tactless and it formed my opinion of the guy. If that didn't happen, I'd like to know before I stick my foot in my mouth later. :D

I think it was him, though it could've been another of the new staff. But it was after Saban got hired. Just before he got brought on officially.

i think dooley was the special teams guy who did the deed. somebody set me right (or wrong). i forget who he called but i think it was dooley

I think hes a smart guy but I don't think he will take Sabans job because If we win a SB within 3 years I can see him getting a HC job somewhere possibly like back in Collage or NFL.

OK, gotcha.

I just don't know if Muschamp is HC material. He's a GREAT D coordinator though.

He is HC material I'm betting...I was real impressed with him in the pre-season Press conferences. We definately need to keep him...I think that's one reason why Saban has given him the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive coordinator Title. The only way he can legally break his contract is if someone offers him a Head Coaching position and that's not happening for a few years at least. The same is true of WR's coach Charlie Baggett...If Linehan leaves for a Head Coaching position he can't take Baggett with him because Baggett would have to be offered a higher position than he currently has in order to break his contract to leave...And Baggetts title is Assistant Head Coach/WR's coach...At least I think that's how it works?
