Obviously, we're going into the draft with mindset that we're going find our starting right tackle in the first couple of rounds in the draft. Wether it be Zack Martin, Morgan Moses, Jack Mewhort, or whoever. Although, I think it's highly likely we'll draft a guard as well, I don't see us starting two rookies on the right side of the line. From what I've read Shelley Smith is much more suited to play left guard. Do any of you see us picking up a guy like Wade Smith or Travelle Wharton as a stop gap after the draft? Or, do you think we'll roll with Dallas Thomas or another rookie at right guard?

If we dont draft a guard in the first 2 rounds I would like to sign one of those 2 guys. I dont feel comfortable starting dallas thomas or a 3rd round rookie.

If dallas thomas beats them out so be it

It's about time we see what we have in Dallas Thomas... but we should draft a backup plan... he is a Jeff Ireland pick after all.

Shelley Smith is atrocious as a pass protector. No way he plays left guard. He is a turnstile at pass pro and should only be used as a 6th OL on obvious run plays. Essentially, he is an elephant fullback lead blocker for short yardage and goal line situations.

We are a passing WCO and need OL who can pass protect. We run the ZBS and need mobile guys, but the first pre - requisite is that they be able to pass protect. Shelley Smith is very poor at that. If he starts at guard over a rookie we are in deep shiz.

Wade Smith and Travelle Wharton are both major upgrades to Shelley Smith in our offense. Shelley Smith is a raw project.

I agree with digital re smith... who is a player I like who could have anlot of upside. He is at best in a competition for a starting spot.

If we dont draft guards im sure we will look at the vet options after the draft and I have read in the past that we have been in contact with both these players already

I've been driving the wharton train for many moons now. If you put him at RG and have Shelley smith (up and coming guard who plays better at LG) Dallas Thomas (played LG senior year) and Garner and Brenner (both filled in at LG at end of year). If those 4 compete at LG and we sign Wharton for RG. We only need a RT.

I don't think Smith was brought in to be a 6th O Lineman, I think the plan is to coach him up to play LG.

5 sacks in 731 snaps?
Oh my god how bad can you get!?!?
Seriously guys this kid will start and will be okay next to Albert and Pouncey

he started 4 games last year....calling him atrocious is a little bit far fetched and he will absolutley start, he is great at pulling so i don't know where you get that part of not being mobile enough......btw wharton is considering retirement..

I think one more veteran guard should be in the works, but there are ton out there. Maybe the team waits until after the draft.

Monty Briesel and Wade Smith have both played under Benton previously

I really thought when the Raiders released Briesel the Fins would bring him in for a visit. He played very will at Houston under Benton. His first year in Oakland was a disaster from what I've read was caused by a nasty ankle injury. Last year however he played like a top 10 guard again. I definitely think he would be an upgrade to what was on the field last year.

I have noticed that this coaching staff & GM dont really like to sign older FA's at this point to fix the oline. So quite possibly their strategy is to bring in younger guys on the cheap who they feel they can "coach up" or maybe bring in a few older guys after the draft for depth/competition.

Wade was bad last year in pass blocking, and much worse on the run, while playing for Benton, and is 33. Not an option.

Wharton was GREAT but, has said he wants to maybe work out something with Carolina if he does not retire. Very unlikely.

Philbin said he wanted to check out the young guys before looking at a vet. This was before the Fox signing. Have to believe he was talking about seeing how Brenner and Thomas come into voluntary workouts to check their strength, a closed look at Shelly, and Fox as well. Add in hw the draft shakes out, and who becomes available after it.

As far as Shelly, he played a third of the snaps last year, and pass blocked 200 times. He gave up 2 sacks (not bad) but, 2 hits and 12 hurries to go with a -6 grade (not good). If we look a little deeper, there were 2 games where he pass blocked 50 times, and gave up the 2 sacks, 1 hit, and 6 hurries for a combined -5 grade, and one was the last game of the year when Seattle beat up on the Rams. On the other 150, he was just a bit below average, and a BEAST on the run.

He played more at RG, and not sure where LG as a better fit comes from. I believe that Philbin, Hichey, and Benton signed him because they think he will be a starter, and can improve his pass protect.

Smith or Wharton? Like Richard Pryor in Brewster Millions, none of the above.

The option as I see them @ OG... a) Trade down (mid 20's) for Su-a-Filo, b) Trai Turner in the 4th or 5th, c) Ikard in the 5th or 6th.

Do the phins really want Briesel considering who Oakland's OL coach is? :ponder:
