So the NFL is telling us a player can go for the ball and hit it out of the end zone, and it counts as a safety…..AND there's no penalty. But Vernon (or whoever it was) tries to recover the ball and that gets flagged????!!!!

The refs were thinking about using that one again. That is what took so long.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the play. Crazy announcers didn't even bring it up.

I thought the officials indicated that Vernon deliberately batted the ball on the play he was flagged on. The play in this game tonight, was not deemed to be a deliberate batting of the ball, so in the natural course of the play, the ball went out of the back of the endzone.

It is either that.....or those officials are snakes!

Wasn't the argument that Vernon didn't intentionally bat the ball bit was trying to reach out for it instead?

I think the difference is that Vernon was trying to advance the ball while if you bat it backwards for a safety, you are NOT advancing the ball.

Yes, you're 'advancing' it while on defense in a fumble situation.

Yes it was, and it makes more sense seeing that he had a clear look at the recovery and had no good reason to bat the ball backwards!

I'm sure you guys have seen plays where an offensive player kicked the ball out of the back of his own end zone before. That's legal. It's different if you try to move it the way your team is going than if you try to move it the way the other team wants to go.
