*EDIT.....just editing my original post to show what Walter Football had to say:

Miami Dolphins: JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee
The poor Dolphins are desperate to land Zack Martin - or really, any first-round offensive line talent - but they're all off the board. Martin's long gone, and Miami would have to move up to No. 11 to obtain him. That's unlikely to happen.

The offensive line is still a strong option, however. The team has a first-round grade on JaWuan James, as the Tennessee blocker is viewed as a "plug and play" prospect who could improve Ryan Tannehill's protection.

*** OTHER 2014 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***

1. Zack Martin, OT/G (trade up) - Perhaps the Dolphins will be bold and will move up for the player they love.

2. Eric Ebron, TE - Tight ends tend to go later than most anticipate, so Ebron is a possibility.

He nailed the pick.

He is picking Chris Borland, ILB at #50. Just FYI.

i want asj, or somehow lee, but Borland is a stud and my man crush of the draft. I just wish we would have made a splash in 1. we should have tried to trade down with the saints then pick james. james is not a bad pick the guy is solid just not worth 19

I'm flashing back to how much people hated Walter Football when they predicted we would go 2-14 a few years back. Somehow I think the appraisal of them will be different....

Edit: or maybe not, now that I read the commentary on the pick.

Miami Dolphins: JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee: C- Grade

I loved the crowd reaction to this, as many of the people in the seats responded, "Who?" The Dolphins have loved JaWuan James all along, but there's no doubt that this is a major reach. James might have been available at Miami's second-round pick. I would give Miami a dreaded Millen grade under normal circumstances, but think about what happened last year. The Dolphins almost had to go offensive line to protect Ryan Tannehill, and with the top four tackles off the board (as well as C.J. Mosley and Ryan Shazier), they didn't have much of a choice. I just wish Miami would have traded down.

Its obvious that we're just going to pick for need no matter what. So whatever.

Maybe one day we'll be fortunate enough to be able to pick BPA.

Drafting a need or reaching on a pick isn't a bad thing, as long as those players pan out. The last Tennessee OL we took has been a disaster so far. Barring injury, if this guy isn't a day-one starter, he's a bust to me.

Agreed. We can only hope, right?

When the pick came in, what pissed me off the most was being forced to draft for need. My poor wife and neighbors had to suffer a 10 minute rant about Ireland, Incognito, Martin, etc. I am neither happy or sad that we picked James, but that may be because I am still numb. I have advocated for making sure we draft guys that fit our system and not try and put square pegs in round holes, so if the Dolphins think that James was the highest rated tackle available for our ZBS, then so be it. They SHOULD know better than me. Also, I understand Hickey playing it safe because James was a guy he really wanted, but it sure would have been nice if we could have traded down and got an extra pick. It is what it is. On to day 2. Go Dolphins!!

Dennis Hickey said "there was no question" Ja'Wuan James was going to be the pick. Dolphins had 13 targeted players in the first round.

"The first thing that jumps out is his pass protection," Joe Philbin said of Ja'Wuan James. "The passing game starts with pass protection."

"We feel like he has very good body balance and control....He's a very good athlete," Joe Philbin said of James.

"We liked his durability. We like the fact he played 49 games in one of the toughest conferences in the country," Philbin on Ja'Wuan James.

Philbin said they felt James can pass block 1-on-1 vs. DEs. Said that's probably No. 1 thing that jumped out.

No expert here, and correct me if I am wrong, but isn't pass pro similar in either system? However, it's the running game that a ZBS will help with providing you have athletic enough O-linemen. If James CAN block most DE's 1 on 1, that's huge because it could help free up the TE we were having to keep in to help last year.

There's no such thing as BPA. At least not in the higher rounds. A guy at any position could theoretically be the #1 ranked player on a team's board. Yet, I guarantee that every single team has at least one position that they wouldn't dream of spending a first round pick on. Every pick is needs-based to a degree and I believe that the whole idea of BPA was created a few years ago as a smokescreen and has turned into something that the fans have stupidly gotten caught up in.

SWS84 - I was also expecting a bolder pick, but I'm reminded of the Bill Polian comment that if you are trading down 5 places, then there is a 90% chance that the player you want won't be there. I think they really liked James and were risk averse, to make sure that they got him.
Maybe the departure of Zack Martin and CJ Mosley a few spots before we picked meant Hickey and Philbin said let's play it safe and get the guy we want. Time will tell but it strikes me as a very sensible pick. James is a specialist RT who fits ZBS.

Bro! That's what I was thinking, too. Hickey just didn't want to take the chance. I can respect that because at least we got a guy they think fits our system rather than having to settle. Folks may argue that James would have been there for sure, but how do we really know?
