Pats' fan here, but I don't come with animosity. I feel for you guys. Last night's game was painful to watch.

I watched Wanny's press conference this afternoon and he said something that absolutely floored me. He said that they called more long, downfield pass plays yesterday than any game since he had been with the Dolphins.

Now, I don't know much about game planning, but it seems to me that, if I'm the Dolphins head coach, I figure that I've got to win with defense and do everything I can to make the game easy for my unproven running back, young O-line, and brand new quarterback. The last thing I want to do is make him stand back there and wait for receivers to come open downfield.

Remember Brady's first year? Belichick and Weis had him throwing 3 yard passes all year. They almost NEVER went downfield. It wasn't because they don't like the downfield passing game, but they knew that Brady would get killed. Three years later, they are throwing downfield all the time. But, they waited while their young QB learned how to read NFL defenses and they are careful to try to protect him...either because they've got the pass rush on its heels first or because they've got tight ends and RBs chipping away at the pass rushers.

IMO, Wanny threw Feely to the dogs in last night's game.

Yep.

DW would probably make a decent defensive coordinator, but he's clearly overmatched as a head coach in the NFL. I think he's stuck a bit in the past trying to replicate the model he and JJ had back in Dallas, and he's absolutely convinced the same approach will work today. The other thing that strikes me, is that he hasn't seemed to grow and improve in his job as time goes by. Similar to Fiedler. They both are what they are, and they just don't seem to learn and grow much in their chosen profession.

Agreed. I was thinking the same thing. Why are we not running quick short routes and letting our recievers make plays. Wanny doesnt know what he is doing.

Nice post man!!!!

Good good point.

I remember when Feeley connected short to McMichael in the middle of the field and Randy blasted his way down the field. Let's see more of that! And, maybe two TE's if we ever establish an offensive line.

Wanny explained the gameplan by saying they thought they had matchups with the Dolphins receivers against the Bengals' safeties that would be favorable. But, favorable matchups 20 yards downfield don't mean jack if your QB is lying in a heap.

The Dolphins have no choice this year but to borrow the dink and dunk style offense that Weis/Parcells used fairly successfully with bad QB's with the Jets a few years back and that Weis/Belichick used while giving Brady his on-the-job training. Heck, just look at the job Parcells did last year with the Cowboys -- good defense and no offense at all. Nickle and dimed his way into the playoffs, if I recall -- with no running back and a crack-head QB, no less.

Personally? I'd stick with Fiedler. The Dolphins are going to have no offense no matter what. At least Fiedler is a veteran who is capable of dinking and dunking. With the Dolphin's defense, a touchdown and couple of field goals is enough to win a good many games. I guess if they really think Feeley is the QB of the future, then play him. But, getting him killed every Sunday is NOT the way toi groom the QB of the future.

Pats moving in on the winning streak record. Think they'll break it.
I don't know. The way I see it is that EVERY game in the NFL is a tough game, decided by a few plays here or there. I think the Pats will be a better team this year than last year, but that doesn't mean they'll win as many games. I picked 'em to go 12-4 this year, just because I think you have to crazy to predict more than 12 wins. As you guys know from last year's game in Miami, the Pats pulled a couple wins out of their butts!

Both of the next two opponents, Bills and Dolphins, are truly in total disarray, starting with the front office. However, both have dangerous defenses that can easily win a 9-3 game on any given Sunday. A good defense is a wonderful thing to have in the NFL!

The Bills probably scare me a little more than the Dolphins right now. Although their offense is god-awful (imagine trying to run a West Coast quick passing game with Drew "The Statue" Bledsoe!), they do have some weapons on offense. With Travis Henry, Eric Moulds, and Bledsoe, a mistake on defense can cost you seven points in a hurry.

You guys are in a rough situation with a bad coach that may be in the process of losing his team completely. A good coach would have been in trouble with the R. Williams and Boston situations. A bad coach and you've got the possibility of a complete collapse.

Ironically, the one thing the Bills and the Dolphins have in common is that they have been squandering first round draft picks for two or three years. That's a recipe for disaster in the salary cap era. Even without the weed-induced retirement, paying TWO first round draft picks for a running back is a marginal decision. If it were't the weed, it would have been an ACL.

I was scared to death a year ago that Wayne would do the smart thing and hire Bill Parcells. He would have been the perfect coach to "win now" with your defense and Ricky Williams. Fiedler would have been just fine for Parcells. As it is now, the Dophins probably have to blow the whole thing up, starting with the front office.

And he'll probably do the same thing in the next game too, all in the effort to make the guy he replaced Marino with (Fiedler) look like a good choice.

No kidding -- Wannstedt doesn't know how to groom a QB. And part of this is his getting back at Spielman (unconsciously).

there is no reason why the dolphins arent putting up 20+ points. as bad as that o-line is, they have 3 tremendous reciving threats. mcmichael has been great so far and chambers has been solid too. you have to give booker some time to learn the offense but the fins are gonna see blitzes all year so they better start throwing slants or bombs cause the crap they used last night was embarassing.

Do you think that what Wanny is up to? I find that hard to believe with his job on the line.

Instead, I think the problem is that Wanny (and Speilman) are in denial about what they really have to work with. Good coaches can win 9 or 10 games in the NFL with a bad offense. But, they have to be realistic and game plan accordingly.

I thought that's what Wanny was probably trying to do last night, hampered by a 1.2 yard per carry running game. That's why I was shocked to hear him say they were calling long downfield pass plays last night. That just makes no sense at all.

I don't know about 20 points a game. That would have put them at the 16th best offense in the league last year and I think you realistically have to say the Dolphins offense is "below average".

Heck, they only average 19.4 points a game last season and that was with Ricky Williams. Take away the run threat, add in what is essentially a rookie QB, and that number will be hard to duplicate under the best of circumstances. Seems to me that the Dolphins have to play "small ball" and try to win with defense.

I agree that Chambers and McMichael are pretty talented receivers. But, with the Dolphins O-line and QBs, Wanny better figure out some dink and dunk stuff to get the ball to them fast and hope for YAC gains. Calling more downfield passes "than we've ever called before" in the face of an all out blitz is suicide.
