Want to keep Grant now.

Let's see how it pans out. I think Jakeem's days are probably numbered because we've now got some better options eg Lynn Bowden Jr above. However, it's all set up for lots of competition at WR/Kick Returner at Training Camp. Jakeem is small but tough and feisty. I expect him to fight like hell to hold his position.

Grant should be a much more effective receiver than he’s been, nobody wanted him to realize it more than I.

He doesn’t earn the money and at this point you have to move on as your receiving Corp gets much deeper than it has been.

Signing Fuller and drafting Waddle made it obvious he will not survive trading camp unless his lightbulb goes on and he responds to the challenge!

I believe there is a misconception about how much Grant provides and has provided to the team. Let me share some stats.

Last year was Grant's best year ever in the area of Punt Returns. He returned 29 of them for 330 yards... an average Punt Returner would have averaged about 7 yards per return (or 203 yards)... so Grants advantage to us was 127 yards in 2020.

In the regular offense, he caught 36 passes for 373 yards (ONE TD), and added 3 rushes for 20 yards.

2 Fumbles and numerous drops were committed... including the famous one where the ball bounced off of him and went for Tua's INT. He's already 28 and he's not going to suddenly get better. This is what he is.

If we jettisoned Gramt (please), we'd likely give all of his jobs to Lynn Bowden, who as a rookie caught 28 passes for 211 yards (not much less than Grant in fewer snaps). He caught 27 of those 28 passes after week 12 of the season, so he was coming on after Grant had, once again... failed to show much. Bowden also returned punts at Kentucky...

Here is a TD he scored on a Punt.

Grant is NOT going to get better, his hands have always been, not suspect, but bad. He's too small, and oddly... not very good out of the slot. If we keep Grant over younger, better players... I think I'll be astonished.

Wait what? Conveniently skipped over Grant’s 10+ yard PR average did you?

Waddle and Bowden can handle punt returns. They're not particularly dangerous, and both players have the skillset to excel in that role.

Kick returns are different/more dangerous, and Bowden doesn't have the skillset to thrive there. Waddle does, but you don't want to risk him there except in HIGH-leverage situations.

Outside of Grant, Miami doesn't have anyone who is appealing in that role, but KR is less important than ever, with fewer opportunities, so it's not such a big deal. I could see Miami keeping Grant as a guy to use in certain packages on offense and to continue handling KR, but he could just as easily get crowded out. If you're trying to run the ball, putting Grant in Jet and Orbit motions with Waddle and Fuller on the field should create a lot of space, and if the D doesn't respect Grant on the motion, he obviously has the speed to make them pay. It just depends on the vision for the offense imo.

Anticipating the question: PR is more about agility and making guys miss in tight spaces; KR is more about pure speed and one-cut ability.

I don't see how we can waste a spot on the roster with Grant. No thank you to a possible one play specialist. Our depth no longer allows free rides or in this case a one trick pony...who usually pisses you off more with drops then makes you cheer with results.

I was for cutting Grant after we drafted Waddle and Holland. The reason is obvious.
Now I come around and want to keep Grant as return specialist.
I dont want our potential #1 weapon to put in situation that expose him to unnecessary danger. I still get flash back of the Cincy game cheap shots.

Imagine this, Waddle has a good first few games. Now he is back there fielding punt kickoff. You are the opposite ST coach and gunner. You know Waddle is a potential TD every time he catch a pass. What would you do? Yep, it will make Cincy cheap shots look like patty cake. No please. Keep Grant, and leave Waddle as WR.
Grant was second team all pro so he’s clearly got value but at the same time the numbers game creeps into the receiver room. They have other returner options. I’m not against Waddle being a returner. Injuries happen but Deion Sanders was rather valuable at CB and he did it.

If I'm not mistaken Kirk Merritt also has returned kicks with his 4.3 speed....
Saw this small example:

You can't be scared to play your players...

We know grant is worthless as a WR at this point. His salary isn't worth his value as a return specialist. I'm fine with keeping him if they can re structure his contract.
you mean if he takes a pay cut, right?......no need to restructure his contract as that does nothing for the team. btw, Waddle and/or Holland could get hurt at their regular positions so if they return kicks then they return kicks. I don't want them covering kicks tho but Waddle can be a real weapon returning kicks.

Here is the All Pro Punt Returner from last year. Gunnar Olszewski: You will note that he does not make 4M/season like Grant does.

For this comparison to have any meaning, it would have to be in reference with what Grant made his first 3 years as a player.

I'd like to see you present that comparison with corrections for the different value of a dollar for the years involved, so that we can see what their equivalent earnings really were. Then you have something meaningful to compare.

What we don't know is how much Gunnar will make when he gets a new contract. That would be much more telling as to his value of a special teams player.

I hope you see that I'm looking for real equivalencies, not just current pay status. Your comparison used a new players salary which is usually much less money when compared to players who have been given new contracts for similar positions. That makes current salary comparisons in the NFL almost useless.

After re-aligning the salaries to be compared, you should adjust the salary numbers based on the "value of a dollar" for the years salaries being compared. Typically, newer "value of a dollar" is lower then past years values.
Then you have a meaningful comparison worth talking about.

I am looking forward to seeing your updated comparisons.
