Want to keep Grant now.

Who also is a kr, not JUST a pr. Grant has us in good field position 98% of the time AND (as you seem to have ommitted) he has 5 return scores on top of that in his short career. I also want to see what i call a JET SET of fuller, waddle, albert wilson and Grant. With that 4 wide set, someone (or more) WILL be wide open!! Grant is a busy, productive player and is worth his money. He is a great kid and works his butt off. Another feather or two in his hat.
Pfft... he has 5 return TDs in five years. Three on Punts and 2 on Kickoffs (which are now much harder after rules changes). A Jag with as many chances as he has had would be good for at least 2-3. He does not ADD much... see that word... ADD.

The difference between Jakeem (Clank) Grant and a jag is about 4 yards per return.

They say, "but he flips the field"... occasionally, but all Punt Returners do that. People seem to think that after we cut Grant, we won't have a Punt Returner. Yep, Grant is gone, I guess we won't even put a guy back there this year. Sigh...

What you are missing... and I'm wondering if it is deliberate... is how little this matters.

An average punt return is about 7 yards... so he gets us an average of 4.4 more yards per punt. Big woop...

4.4 yards times his 29 punt returns per year is a laughably low number. Huuuge benefit to the team... not.

Hey Tua... whatcha gonna do with that extra 4 yards? Are you goin' to Disneyland?

At 1.5 punt returns per game... that's 7 extra yards per game. Wow! WHAT A FIELD FLIP BABEE!!°
So you don’t value field position?

I don't get these opt-out grudges.

Keep the guys that are currently performing the best (even if they hurt your feelings last year)

I think we are just in a different place now.

It's like someone in a relationship moving away and then coming back years later. Like there is no hard feelings, we are just in a diff point in our lives now

I agree, many ppl have become used to the bottom of the roster being so irrelevant that there is room for fan favorites out of loyalty or simply liking the person.

Those days are, hopefully, over.

I like Jakeem, but at this point his lone value as a punt returner is not enough to warrant a spot.

As has been pointed out, the statistical difference between him, and an "average" returner is not that much.
I tend to disagree. A dangerous punt tickoff specialist at pro bowl level, you make room in roster for him, as long as it doesn't break the bank.

Cutting or trading Grant is a no brainer. With all the other talent at the position I'd rather roll his $3mil+ into a player next year versus a guy who would be struggling to see 20% of the snaps.

Hell, I'd rather the Fins give that money to a Gesicki extension

It works out to a little over 4M. 3.6M in direct salary and another 550K in achievable bonuses that he'd receive just by showing up.

Contract reconstruction. Grant would do it i think. Don't think he will get anything near 3 mil in open market.

I’m sorry, you’re right. He currently only counts 4.69 against the cap. Lol
Cute
I am taking about contract restructure.
Grant knows full well he would not get anywhere near that in open market. He will either get cut and risk unemployment, or take a bit less and stay with dolphins.

If he made half of what he is making now, then maybe... but honestly, how many actual big plays do you remember from last year?

I know that the acclaim of being 2nd team all-pro is kind of cool, but he had one 88 yard TD last year... and only 330 total yards in returns. So the other 28 returns totaled only 242 yards. In the passing game, he was overwhelmed getting only 1 TD and 36 receptions all year long.

This isn't really production that a couple dozen other guys couldn't replicate, or even improve upon. Bowden might be better... I'm certainly going to try him in training camp and find out.

Grant isn't a bad guy, he just doesn't really provide much spark. I mean, I know that the threat is there... but he rarely delivers. He has a TOTAL of 11 TDs in 5 years. Can you imagine signing a pass rusher with only 11 sacks in five years and thinking that he was going to make a real difference?

To me, Grant is a guy who constantly looks great, but actually doesn't do a whole lot.

I am not saying we HAVE TO keep Grant. I just don't want Waddle or Holland back there. If Hern or Wilson is willing and prove themself as a reliable returner in camp, then I don't mind letting Grant go.

I think it's Bowden first... then Wilson with a few from Waddle thrown in to keep teams nervous.

Now, if Grant makes the team, I'll be shocked, but I won't be mad. It will just mean that Grant has something that Flores values that I'm not seeing. Maybe he's GREAT in the receiver room; maybe he pumps guys up... I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I'm smarter than a professional. If you want that, go to the Draft area here and three or four guys there will do that for you.

To me, this is staggeringly obvious.

One Punt Return TD every other year and an extra 4 yards per return? Really?

We don't even know if Bowden (or one of the others) couldn't give us the exact same thing. It's not like they might not be just as, or almost as good. Hell, if the muffs and drops went away, we'd be up on that deal.

I don't see the value here... his money could go to something we need more... like one more pass rusher, or a few bucks thrown to one of our coming free agents...

Grant is a cool guy; he is exciting, but ultimately, he has not provided us with much in the way of tangible results-- becoming the 2nd string all-pro punt returner is nice, but how many games did it help us win? Zero.

In comparison, I wonder how much Devin Hester helped the Bears back in the day
