Want to keep Grant now.

If he made half of what he is making now, then maybe... but honestly, how many actual big plays do you remember from last year?

I know that the acclaim of being 2nd team all-pro is kind of cool, but he had one 88 yard TD last year... and only 330 total yards in returns. So the other 28 returns totaled only 242 yards. In the passing game, he was overwhelmed getting only 1 TD and 36 receptions all year long.

This isn't really production that a couple dozen other guys couldn't replicate, or even improve upon. Bowden might be better... I'm certainly going to try him in training camp and find out.

Grant isn't a bad guy, he just doesn't really provide much spark. I mean, I know that the threat is there... but he rarely delivers. He has a TOTAL of 11 TDs in 5 years. Can you imagine signing a pass rusher with only 11 sacks in five years and thinking that he was going to make a real difference?

To me, Grant is a guy who constantly looks great, but actually doesn't do a whole lot.

I like the pass rusher analogy.

Those going gaga over Grant have an Al Davis like obsession w/ speed.

If he added as much value to the phins as say Az-Zahir Hakim did to the Martz era rams than keep him

That said, Grant IMO is not as valuable to the team as Jesse Davis.

I was for cutting Grant after we drafted Waddle and Holland. The reason is obvious.
Now I come around and want to keep Grant as return specialist.
I dont want our potential #1 weapon to put in situation that expose him to unnecessary danger. I still get flash back of the Cincy game cheap shots.

Imagine this, Waddle has a good first few games. Now he is back there fielding punt kickoff. You are the opposite ST coach and gunner. You know Waddle is a potential TD every time he catch a pass. What would you do? Yep, it will make Cincy cheap shots look like patty cake. No please. Keep Grant, and leave Waddle as WR.
Look at that 92 Yd TD pass he dropped that was a PERFECT throw by Tua Tagovailoa in the 3rd Qtr. See if you want to keep him at the expense of Albert Wilson.

Pfft... he has 5 return TDs in five years. Three on Punts and 2 on Kickoffs (which are now much harder after rules changes). A Jag with as many chances as he has had would be good for at least 2-3. He does not ADD much... see that word... ADD.

The difference between Jakeem (Clank) Grant and a jag is about 4 yards per return.

They say, "but he flips the field"... occasionally, but all Punt Returners do that. People seem to think that after we cut Grant, we won't have a Punt Returner. Yep, Grant is gone, I guess we won't even put a guy back there this year. Sigh...

josh cribbs stuck around on cleveland mainly as a returner for 8 years and barely contributed as a receiver, his best year was year 7, 518yds 4tds on 41 catches before that he never had more than 200yds in a season

cordarelle patterson has never had more than 469yds in a season receiving but hes been in the league for 8 years mostly for his kick return ability

if anyone is just another guy its albert wilson

Yeah... that extra 4 yards per punt return... once or twice per game... yeah... I'm gonna shell out BIG money for those 7-8 yards per game. Woo Hoo!
Hahah - it’s 4.4 !!! Seriously, I’m disputing your claim that 11.4 is only slightly better than the average of 7.0. Those yards do matter. They put you 4 and a half yards closer to the other teams EZ or FG range so it’s not as if punt return yard averages are inconsequential. Then throw in that the guy takes kicks to the house w nice degree of regularity and it’s worth it to me. Whatever we get from him as a WR is a bonus. Regarding the latter his catches to targets was surprisingly decent last year. Perhaps not the best analogy but we did draft a KR with our number 1 pick once so someone must have thought those returns were important. We did go 1-15 that year so no need use that fact to kick sand on my point :).

I agree w this. For me, Grant adds more to the team than Wilson or Hurns. And nice point on Patterson and Cribbs. There was also that guy that played for the Jets and then Seattle who basically only was a KR threat (I forget his name). There are players like this and have been over the years.

I don’t care about that one play. We know he can’t catch like that. Albert Wilson dropped one VERY similar when he was a Chief and playing US !!! Actually, Wilson offers less than Grant. He doesn’t make game changing plays and Grant does. And he’s not a chain moving WR so I’m left to wonder what his value is other than he has a nice twitch in space for some RAC. Let’s see how he looks post injury and post year off. I prefer Grant over him and Hurns.

Game changing plays:

Grant 10 fumbles - 6 recoveries

Wilson 0 fumbles - 1 recovery

If Wilson can also return, i am all for keeping Wilson instead of Grant.

What you are missing... and I'm wondering if it is deliberate... is how little this matters.

An average punt return is about 7 yards... so he gets us an average of 4.4 more yards per punt. Big woop...

4.4 yards times his 29 punt returns per year is a laughably low number. Huuuge benefit to the team... not.

Hey Tua... whatcha gonna do with that extra 4 yards? Are you goin' to Disneyland?

At 1.5 punt returns per game... that's 7 extra yards per game. Wow! WHAT A FIELD FLIP BABEE!!°
You're significantly down playing the value behind the stat because it doesn't fit your narrative.

Anybody who has a sound understanding of the game and how it works knows very well that returners are graded based off of both return average and TD's.

Grant has excelled at both of these categories since entering the league.

So either you don't have a sound understanding of the game of football or you are blatantly spewing nonsense in order to "win" the argument.

Sad part is, either way you lose....

I like grant but the only thing he’s good at is kick returns and most teams nowadays kick the ball out of the end zone. He’s not a good WR plus he’s getting paid pretty good. I’ll be surprised if he makes the team.

Gunner was not established before last season so why would he be on ANY contract outside of rookie pace?

Furthermore, Grant is better and has done it at a much higher level for a much longer period of time.

Once again that pull it out of your rear end thing....
Gunner had a nice season returning punts but didn’t fare so well on KO w a long of 30 yards. He also only caught 5 passes for a 2-year total of 7. We’ll see if he continues to be a good PR but I have a sneaking suspicion that what he did last year was a bit of an anomaly.

LOL...

There is a reason that most punt returners make minimum salary... it's called value.

You think this is about losing... read your comments again, and then go look in the mirror.

Field position is extremely important. That you can get lower paid guys to handle that part of the game doesn’t mean it’s not deemed as valuable.
