Fish-Head
U made the pudding but forgot the proof.
I'm reading this all over the boards and it seems to be the popular catch phrase for this draft... While I absolutely agree in principle I would caution people to not get too excited just yet...
Let me begin with the 'givens'... Football is a game of inches no question and the team which controls that little piece of real estate between the opposing lines invariably wins... But I have noticed a few disturbing trends in the arguments on many threads concerning this draft.
The biggest is that a vaunted pass rush will cover for the deficiencies of the secondary... While no question it HELPS this is absolutely not true. In the NFL there are many ways to counter an effective pass rush, split backs acting as blockers in the backfield, running out of the shotgun more can also help but the biggest is switching to 'timing patterns'. This is simply throwing to a 'spot' on the field and does not require the QB to hang on to the ball until a receiver is open... Also, the size and leaping ability of todays 'prototypical' receiver again (think Randy Moss) makes it easy for a QB to simply toss it up and let his receiver go get it... Simply stated if this was an absolute truth then you would see every defense blitzing on every down. Having physical shut down corners has become an absolute MUST for EVERY team in the league. I think BP should have followed his own philosophy of bringing in 'platoons' of player for every position to compete and picked a CB somehwere in this draft...
Next from those in the 'Pro Henne' camp I read alot that he was brought in to compete with Beck for the starting position... This is absolutely true. BUT... HAS EVERYONE SIMPLY FORGOTTEN McCOWN??? I think in the hundreds of QB posts debating Beck vs Henne he has been mentioned MAYBE a handful of times. Like he has disappeared... McCown was also hand picked by BP to come in and COMPETE. He did not sign with us to be a back up he signed to have a shot as the starter. In my mind this negated the NEED to take Henne in the 2nd round only because his talent was not such that he differentiated himself to such a degree from the QB's taken after him... Henne at 2b was a value pick certainly... Woodson in the 6th?? THAT was a steal.
Lastly I read EVERYONE talking about how LoBo was traded because he was not a Parcells guy... Not typical Parcells size etc... We are a power running team I KNOW... But a change of pace back is essential in the scheme... So to all of you that say Parcells does not apreciate this type of player... I have two words for you... DAVE MEGGETT... One of BP's all time favs that followed him to no less than 3 franchises!! Even coaching for a time in Dallas with him. Sorry but I think he was EXACTLY in that mould... An all purpose back.
While I like the idea of the 'War in the Trenches' those were the three mistakes IMO we made in this draft... That is all.
