Was Culpepper the problem?

The change to Harrington earlier this year was probably warranted. However, having a qb who is ranked as the fourth worst starting qb in the league was not the kind of improvement that I was hoping for.

Matt Leinart, Andrew Walter, and Vince Young have lower QB ratings. Oakland and Arizona miserable offensive lines.

Passer Ratings (sacks are not part of the calculation)

Daunte Culpepper - ranked 23rd in the league (77.0)
Game 1: 49.6
Game 2: 91.9
Game 3: 83.5
Game 4: 86.4

Joey Harrington - ranked 31st in the league (65.7)
Game 5: 58.2
Game 6: 68.6
Game 7: 64.9
Game 8: 66.8
Game 9: 71.3

I thought we were past this.... :shakeno:

Even people who are staunch Culpepper fans have come to realize it was time for him to take a seat and let him regain his health which hopefully will help him regain form.

It's very tough to explain. I think many of us agree that the QB rating stat is wishy washy as many of us have no clue how it is calculated (in fact I've never met anyone who does). I am a firm believer of offensive cohesion, and think that was the killer earlier this year. The O-line was unsettled coming into the season, which IMHO is a HUGE mistake as you should know who your 5 guys are by the 3rd preseaon game at the very latest and if they are that close just choose 5 and go with them, and Daunte really struggled playing behind them. I also noticed that Daunte doesn't force anything, if the play is not there he takes a sack (many of them) while Joey seems to execute the play called no matter what (not always a good thing). Seeing that sacks are not part of the rating that may be a reason why Daunte has the better of the 2. I do think that after moving Shelton to RG, and letting the line play that way for a few weeks, the O-line has improved. I also think the longer Joey plays with the offense the better he will get as well. I admit, I'd be curious to see how Daunte would fair now, becuase the O-line is much improved, but wouldn't screw with chemistry at this point. The only way I'd bring Daunte back is after our 8th loss. If we want to be good for a long time we need good players (not 11 pro bowlers) who play together for a long time. Constantly swapping players, especially along the O-line, will accomplish nothing.

These last two games you've seen a defensive resurgence. And if you think about it, that was where any kind of resurgence was likely to come from.

If you've got a basketball team built around a superstar, and he's playing just kind of pretty good right now while the team around him is playing only mediocre, or even bad...where's the improvement likely to come from? The guys that are only built to be halfway decent to begin with, or the superstar that is supposed to be a superstar?

Well, our D is the star of this team. Showed it last year and this year. So if this team was going to have a resurgence, it was going to come from the D. And when you look at the D, you see Yeremiah Bell as a primary difference-maker but also really the guys up front. The guys up front are smacking the opposing QBs around like lions with a small animal. Kevin Carter is having a resurgence, Jason Taylor has really dialed it up, Channing Crowder is dialing it up and adding pressure to our packages, Vonnie Holliday is dialing it up, and Yeremiah Bell is a difference maker in the secondary.

That's where this run has come from. To me all the talk about the offense is just results-oriented. I don't think we're really cutting down on the mistakes as much as advertised on offense. We gave the ball to the Bears twice on offense, and against KC from the dugout I certainly saw a few balls that were very very close to being picked off. One to Bernard Pollard that he couldn't haul in even though he got right under it, and I believe another to Surtain that he couldn't haul in. We also gave it to them on that botched reverse.

This is a DEFENSIVE resurgence and if we're going to keep it going then the defense has to keep stepping up the intensity, smacking quarterbacks in the face, and put it upon themselves to be the best damn defense in the NFL because they have the ability to be exactly that and we'll win a lot of ball games with that. The Ravens and Bucs won the Super Bowl with that.

i would not say daunte was the problem, the biggest problem was the oline and now that the phins tweaked it, the right side has been outstanding the oline is much improved

another problem was not using ronnie, lately he has been getting his carries and he has been great the last couple of weeks

yesterday he probably would have had 100 yards but he missed 3 drives i think with the groin injury

also another thing is the defense, the secondary with the addition of bell( which should have been there week1) has been strong and shutting people down

i do agree, daunte needs to get healthy, he needs to have all this time to regroup and comeback ready next year

Yes, nice post.

Daunte was not 100% which can hurt your confidence out there. Let him heal up this year and take over next season.

If Culpepper was the problem, then Nick Saban and the doctors were the bigger problem.

Culpepper, like I've been saying, was never ready to play since he got here.

Let's wait until he's 100% to judge the guy. We haven't even seen him near 80% yet!

That's the MO I would assume. I wonder how his knee is comming along because if Joey continues to struggle and gets us into a game where we are struggling big time on O and trailing in the second half, nothing would be better than to see Daunte come off the bench and rally the Fins to a win. Similar to 2003 when the injured Jay Fiedler came in for a strugling Griese vs. Washington.

Honestly, if Joey could improve his game we would ahve a very good chance to win out. I think he will get better. Hate to criticize him after back to back wins but his rating has not even hit Gus Frerrotte status yet.

That is very true... I like Joey and think he can be a good QB... It just seems that right now, he's playing to not lose.

Don't get me wrong, he's still our best option at QB right now. I just hope he can step it up and actually win games rather than not lose them...

My 2 cents...

Yep, if you notice he's steadily improving every game, I just think folks are having unrealistic expectations here. Daunte got all TC snaps, Preseason snaps and the first four games. Joey has had 4 weeks or so with the first team and continues to improve every game. Had he had the advantage of all TC and Preseason i'm sure he would be much better off right now but as long as he keeps improving he's doing great all things considered!

We are winning that's what matters the most!
