Was Miami the Best Job?

I don't think you can say it was the best job, especially since the Giants job is open and that is, historically, one of the two best jobs in football. That said, the Eagles job has real issues, the Titans are terrible and about to be up for sale (ZERO job security), Jed York just finished driving off the best coach in America and then firing the next guy after one year, and the Browns are worse than a dumpster fire.

I pointed out previously that some things about our job are MUCH better than a lot of people want to admit. This is something that Jon Kitna talked about in his interview on 790 today, apparently he spoke to Gase recently and Gase told him he thought this was a great job because there's a nucleus of talent, a quarterback, and an owner who will spend whatever amount of money it takes. Believe it or not, Ross is actually a selling point over guys like Haslam, York, etc.

So while I don't think we were the best job, we're moving back into the realm of respectability.

As frustrated as I was that Ross refused to pull the trigger on Joe after year 2 or 3, it also demonstrated that he will be patient with a bad coach.

A 5 year contract and full roster control likely had something to do with it as well.

2 years ago Ken Whisenhunt was preparing for a flight to Detroit. If everything went as planned he'd be announced as the Lions new head coach. Suddenly his phone starting ringing off the hook, the Titans had contacted his agent and offered him a fully guaranteed deal. The rest is history.

I think its telling that we announced Gase's deal as a 5 year contract as opposed to Joe Philbin's initial 4 year deal. We know Gase is calling the plays and has been allowed final say over the 53 man roster. I can't help but wonder what other incentives we handed him in order to seal the deal.

As for the OP's question: no, Miami wasn't the best job. The Bucs and, as Wanny pointed out, the Giants were better. A lot better, even with the Glazer's kneejerk tendencies. But we might have made him an offer he couldn't refuse. An offer added by the fact we have a quarterback to work with.

There is talent on this team, the owner opens his checkbook, the contract was a safe five years, and he was offered roster control. The last ten years have been bad but this is still a proud historical franchise with names like Marino, Csonka, and Shula hanging in the halls.
