I was reviewing the Giants draft and in round 3 they moved in front of the phins 2 spots and picked 6"6 WR Ramses Barden from Cal Poly. 2 picks later we picked Patrick Turner. Just wonder how many of you fans think that Barden was our original 3rd round target and Turner was our fall back option if he was not there. Barden and Turner just happen to be the tallest biggest receivers in the draft. Do you think the Giants got our primary pick??

no, i actually think they wanted turner all along. ive heard good things about him from ota's. i think people are just afraid of usc wide outs.

Ramses II was a much more prolific ruler, speaking Egyptionally. Maybe that supercedes all other considerations.

hahahaha....honestly, if your a guy who likes history, ramses barden stands out so much more in your head (like it does mine) even though i dont know that much about him, haha.

honestly though, i cant be sure just like none of us can, but the front office has their reasons for alot of things and they are also smart guys. Im not sure i'd call any of any teams picks "fall back picks" i just feel like they have a list of guys they like and are open to picking, b/c they know that some will be gone eventually, i dont think they have a primary and a fall back aside from the first 2 rounds maybe. Turner seems like he can become somewhate of a burress, we'll have to wait and see.

p.s. i love the parcells/sporano philosophy. Build the team from the grunts on the line, receivers are something you can develope with hunger ambition and good atitude, with a few exceptions, they are products of solid offensive systems.

They should have taken Jared Cook. Cook is wowing the Titans players and coaches.

Why take a 4.6 guy who isn't good after the catch when you could have a bigger stronger 4.4 guy who can play WR or TE.

I won't believe in Turner until I see him actually getting open and catching balls under duress.

I likr Turnrt but Cook could be a special player

Jeff Ireland has been asked this question a number of times and his answer is that Turner was the Dolphin preferred choice. However, we will never know if he is not being truthful.
Consensus from the OTA's is that Turner is looking excellent. He comes from one of the best college programs in the country (USC Trojans) where he succeeded. I think he caught more TD's last year than any other USC WRs on the roster. He became Sanchez' big target. Everyone is fixated on the lack of success of Williams and Jarrett from USC but Patrick Turner is his own man - he is not Williams or Jarrett - and he should be treated accordingly.
Whether Barden was the intended draft target doesn't matter a damn now. The reality is that we have a terrific big WR prospect in Patrick Turner. I think that we are actually very lucky that the Giants didn't pick him ahead of Ramses Barden.

I have to believe we wanted Barden. I was so pissed when the EAGLES of all teams let the Giants move up to get him.

Turner's our guy tho so what is done is done.

I was really hoping Barden was going to be the pick untill the Giants moved up to snag him, but at least with Turner we still got a big physical WR.

Hard to say whether we wanted Barden ahead of Turner, but the Giants were due to pick four spots after the Fins. They must have figured one of the four or five teams ahead of them was going to select Barden. The Fins were the only team out of those five to select a WR, so good chance that the Giants felt that the Fins were going to take Barden.

I feel the same way you do. I hope Barden destroys the Eagles. I can't believe they did that either.

I have little doubt we would've taken Barden.

At first I thought it was a fallback pick but after hearing Ireland's press conference I think it's pretty clear they were targeting Turner all along.

*EDIT

Here's what Ireland had to say about Turner after the draft:

(On what he saw in Turner this year and why the team selected him) – “I think its confidence. I think his confidence, and his production really grew this year. His touchdown production and some of his catches. I think he became a more confident player and learned. From an offensive perspective, they keyed in on him to be a bit more of a playmaker. What he did this year at USC I think is very respectable. I think he is a very good player. I don’t think 13 touchdowns in two years is anything to be ashamed of. I like the player; we had him up there from day one, so we feel real good about him.”

Word is Barden is having problems with his off the line speed right now anyway.

on the surface it appears that Miami did want Ramses Barden and jumped on Turner when Barden was gone. but the draft is built on deception and it's impossible to know for sure. teams will make it look like they want one player just to keep the eyes off someone else. many times other teams will be pushed into selections or transactions they didn't have to make (the Vernon Carey pick comes to mind). there is no doubt the Giants wanted someone to replace Burress, everyone knew it. the Dolphins showed a ton of interest in Barden and everyone saw that too. it's possible the Giants may have actually been steered towards Barden.

This is pure speculation, but I believe there's a chance Barden wasn't even on our board.

Word from the College Bowl was that he had a very hard time separating from the line, was an unpolished route runner, had to work on his hands, and just plain struggled against top college talent.

It personally doesn't sound like a Parcells pick to me.
