San Diego has a plethora of players entering the free agency, most notably Vincent Jackson, Shawne Merriman. It is almost certain that the Chargers cannot afford to keep both players (due to the need to signing others as well), so we must grab one of them.

If Vincent Jackson (who I think is more likely to stay) hits the FA, we must grab him without hesitation. Then we won't have to spend a draft pick on Arrelius Benn or Dez Bryant. He is the type of receiver I want on my team. He has the size (6'5"), speed, and catching ability that our receivers clearly don't have. He will become Henne's favorite target and the passing game will be respectable. Then, we're free to draft Rolando McClain, assuming he's still on the board.

If Shawne Merriman becomes a FA, we must sign him immediately. He is still very young (25 years old), and he has shown spark of his old days. The Dolphins primary pass rushers are old (Porter is 32, Taylor is 35). Taylor is probably gone after this season, and Porter has looked like a shell of himself. However, I think Merriman will hit the FA because the Chargers have already planned for his exit by using their first round draft pick on Larry English. Merriman will become our premiere pass rusher (I believe he will rebound to his full strength; he's still young and has time), and then we can focus on drafting a receiver to help out Henne (Bryant or Benn). Or we can even strengthen our defense even further by drafting McClain if he's still there.

So, Jackson and Merriman are most likely not going to be in a Chargers uniform together next year, and if either one of them becomes a free agent, we must take them. Yeah?

Merriman is washed up big time he is a roid baby. Stay as far away as possible PLEASE!!! Now Jackson I would take in a heartbeat.

Sproles is a free agent as well, as is Malcolm Floyd I believe. They can't keep all of them and with LT's struggles we may have a shot at a good player there.

Jackson yes, Merriman no.

Jackson would cost bukos $$$$. But what the heck we need a big tall receiver with separation speed. We went all out to get corners in this past draft. It has been past time to go all out for WRs with athleticism - draft and FA. Having a passing game only aids the WILDFIN and the running game. This league is pass happy. If we are not that at least be balanced. Of all the 32 team rosters we are bottom 5 (and being generous)IMHO as far as speed and big play ability. I don't agree with having nothing but Ginn and a bunch of possession receivers. We are rebuilding so now it is time to address the future at WR or we will continue to be a gone pecan when we are behind by 7+ points in the 4th.

And as far as Merriman..NO! He is used up with no upside. We already have someone at LB with that dilemna to go along with their diarrhea of the trash mouth.

i'd be all for getting jackson - i don't care how much he would cost. we need someone like him that bad.

no for merriman. he's played like *** this year.

I'd love to get Jackson but they are going to do everything they can to resign him. Teams don't just let their #1 receiver walk out the door. I think Merriman would be no different then Porter, we would be over paying for a name that is past his prime.

The collective bargaining agreement will play a big role if we can get him (Jackson) as well.

Quote from Espn afcwest blog:
"Opposing teams are noticing Jackson for many reasons. Foremost is that he is a pending free agent. If there isn't a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), Jackson will be a restricted free agent. If there is a new CBA, Jackson will be an unrestricted free agent. San Diego has several pending free agents, but Jackson is becoming the team’s biggest free-agent priority."

In another words if he is a restricted FA the Chargers can match any offer and he would have no choice but to stay with them. Where if he's an unrestricted FA he can sign with who ever he wants.

I'll take the Dez Bryant/Arrelious Benn option thanks...

You can forget even getting Jackson.Theres not a chance in hell that the Chargers let him go.If he does become a free ageent the Chargers will just slap him with the franchise tag.

We can all dream but its not going to happen.

how is no one talkikng about malcolm floyd here?
Vincent Jackson will be resigned, but i don't think they can afford Floyd once they realize he's one hot ticket..

you merriman bashers are dumbdumbs, he's comming off a major injury, he's not washed up. This guy is young, and he's a beast.. I'm worried about his injury history, but when he's healthy he's one of the best, ridiculous you don't agree, the guy is WAYYYYYY better than any LB we have on our roster..

Merriman has two negatives agaisnt him.First he's injury prone and second he's been caught doing steroids.
