i think one way to help our special teams is to get a kickoff specialist that can kick the ball in the endzone..carpenter is a good field goal kicker but never has touchbacks on kickoffs..i know it would take up a roster spot but it could help our special teams...anything we can do to help our horrendous special teams..

He occasionally has a kickoff that goes for a touchback. He is a good kicker on field goals, but the problem with getting a kickoff specialist is that it takes up another valuable roster spot.

this would be a band aid approach IMO...we need to fix the problem not mask it.

We need better coverage units

Take a look at kickers stats and tell me how many touchbacks the leading kicker has. it is still not a high percentage. We need better coverage.

Lets just find a kicker than can do both, thats not too much to ask. Carpenter will do for this year, next year bring in someone else.

I don't see Carpenter going anywhere. He was handpicked by parcells and Parcells forced his will to make sure he became our kicker. Feely wasn't a bad kicker for us but Parcells cut him loose anyway. He wouldn't have done that for a stop-gap player. He would have just used Feely then.

Hmm Feeley made millions and Carpenter league minimum Im sure it was a hard choice for Parcells or ireland. Why would we not upgrade if we have the chance, Carpenter does get a lack of touchbacks, but hell I have no guarantee but most coaches would upgrade if geiven a chance.

Wasn't Feely cut because of locker room distractions?

I do miss how Mare would consistently boot them through the endzone, but I don't think we can justify using a roster spot for KOs. I know what you are talking about though...that last KO was caught at about the 20 which is unacceptable (prolly just shanked it trying too hard).

The most underrated aspect of kicking is kickoff ability and Mare was the best in the league and still one of the best on kickoffs.

Okay, I looked it up. Janikowski of Oakland leads the NFL in percentage of kickoffs that result in touchbacks. You know how many it is?

38%

Less than half of his kicks are touchbacks.

We need better coverage. Period.

For the most part Carpenter has a good leg even for kickoffs (I mean he doesnt have a Mare leg booming them out of the endzone), he isnt as bad a kick off specialist as some on here view him to be. The main reason teams get good field position on us is due to piss poor special team coverage.

Against Denver; Carpenter had 6 kickoffs; 1st - touchback, 2nd - into the endzone, 3rd - into the endzone, 4th - not a good one to the Denver 13, 5th - touchback, 6th - into the endzone...

Against Seattle; Carpenter has 4 kickoffs; 1st to Seattle 3, 2nd - touchback, 3rd - into the endzone, 4th - not a good one to the Seattle 13.

So the past 2 games out of 10 kickoffs, Carpenter had 3 touchbacks, 4 kicks into the endzone, 1 good kick to the 3 and 2 bad kicks to the 13. So one can say that out of his last 10 kicks, only 2 of them were bad ones. Over the past 2 games, 70% of his kicks have gone into the endzone, it isnt his fault the coverage units let the returner take them to their 40.

We need to correct the special teams, not change the kicker

well Carpenter is about 11 percent. What does that mean . Well Janikowski puts teams at thier 20 almost 40 percent of the time to start and Carpenter its 10 percent of the time. That is a big differance.

The art of kicking is one of the many subjects I know very little about other than what's plain to see. My question is: since Carpenter has so much going for him, is it a matter of technique or leg-strength that influences distance - or both. If it's the latter, then I gotta believe he can be coached up and put on a leg-strengthening conditioning program offseason. I realize there are some physical limitations, similar to how much wgt you can bench press despite training and conditioning, but have to believe that there's still plenty of room for improving. Eh????

Wonder what his touchback percentage was at Montana, anyone know?

edit: found it:

But what is impressing coaches about Carpenter is his strong kickoff leg. As a senior last year, Carpenter kicked off 78 times for 5,006 yards. That's an average of 64.2 yards per kickoff. If you translate that to where the opposing return man averages fielding the ball (in the NFL, not college), it would be from his own 6 yard line. Also, of those 78 kickoffs, Carpenter only kicked one out of bounds.
