In the July pre training camp drought, I thought I pass on this one quote from Todd Bowles on Vontae Davis.

"Said Dolphins defensive backs coach Todd Bowles of CB Vontae Davis, "The foot quickness -- and being in shape -- have to come more. He's got to get in NFL shape. He can be fast and not have foot quickness. He has it. He just [needs repetitions]."

So he's out of shape?? I thought he was one of the most NFL ready players in terms of body and shape and athleticism, I could understand if he said he needs to work on play recognition but to say hes not in shapekind of goes against all reports on him that i've heard. But if he had trouble understanding the playbook that would suck worse than not being in football shape i guess.

I think it's more of a situation where he's always used his speed and physical skills to overcome the small details of proper footwork or conditioning. In the NFL, you not only need to have the physical skills and speed, but you have to do them in the right way to get that small edge on others. In the NFL, the level of skill is higher accross the board and you can't just mail it in on your athletic skills like you did in HS and college. What I think coach B is pointing out is that 1) he needs to work on his proper footwork in order to better utilize his quickness; and 2) while physically he looks great, he might not have the endurence that the coach would like him to be at so he doesn't get tired during the games.

Don't worry, it's early and they haven't even put on all the pads yet. He'll be fine once he gets the idea of what it's going to take.

This really isn't a huge surprise. I remember last years TC Sparano was harping on how all the rookies needed better conditioning. It's an adjustment every rookie needs to make.

I'm just glad its just his endurance and footwork that need adjusting. That can all be coached up. I would have been more concerned if her was getting burned consistently in OTA's or if he does in Training Camp.

One thing about Vontae Davis is that his technique has never really been good....he wastes a lot of his speed with poor footwork....missteps, etc...

DF_MD, you live in Waldorf, I'm right down the street in Accokeek, it's great to see another MD fan so close within 10 mins..

Amazing to me that when presented with the tremendous opportunity of an NFL career these guys show up in anything less than the best condition of their lives.

Well, most rookies need conditioning. College shape and NFL shape are vastly different. That's why you see lots of players needs a couple years to develop. It's not like they are slacking. They could well be in the best condition of thier lives, but, again, NFL shape is different.

With all of the talk of rookies coming into camp out of shape I have a question. Are the rookies able to workout at the Dolphins facilities after they are drafted, or are they only allowed to workout there after they are signed. If they are only allowed to workout after they are signed it would make sense that Sparano would see them as out of shape as they have probably not been training up to his standards. Also, we have heard from a countless number of veterans that the dolphins offseason workouts are definately the hardest they have been through, and if the rookies were there wouldn't we have heard from them also?

Vontae Davis is physically cut like a statue. Nobody can say he doesn't work hard enough.

If you ask me, he's too muscled up and not wiry enough. Bulk tends to take away from your stamina and ability to run all day.

I completely agree. Another thing that can hurt him is the heat and his lack of body fat. Too much body fat is a bad thing, but too little can be too. I remember an OTA report saying that he overheated pretty quickly and had to get an IV to get rehydrated (it may have been rookie minicamp).

I've known 6'5", 260lb walls of muscle that could run forever and never get tired. But they were soldiers and a large part of the training of a soldier is long-distance running. If football players ran a couple miles nonstop every day they'd not have endurance problems.

Hell, even Pat Tillman didn't do so hot his first few weeks at Benning. In shape for a football player isn't saying much by the a lot of standards and that's the simple truth of it.
