I know the feeling around the team is mostly disappointment right now. Rightfully so, a lot of us thought the playoffs were imminent this season and barring a small miracle, that won't be happening. When I look back at this lost season, I realize our date was sealed last season when Ross made a public endorsement of Joe Philbin after the Vikings victory. I heard the stories about Joe Philbin finally letting his walls down and bonding with his players for the first time during his tenure with the team. Those stories combined with the acquisition of Ndamukong Suh and what I thought was a pretty solid draft had me feeling like this was our year.... I couldn't have been more wrong.

We failed to address some big holes on the roster: the offensive line and the anemic LB corps. Maybe it was the homer in me, but I thought the strengths of our team would mask the weaknesses. Needless to say that didn't happen. I think the biggest thing we lacked this year was direction and true leadership.

Stephen Ross and Tannenbaum need to hit a home run with this Head Coach acquisition because our hopes for next season and beyond depend on it. They need to be very thorough before making a decision and make sure they get the right guy. I don't know how many more mediocre seasons I can take. The thing about us as an organization is we make splash signings that build buzz and optimism around the team. Im hoping that as an organization we make moves that pay off on the football field and not necessarily in the tabloids.

Assuming the right hire is made at head coach, that leaves is looking at the football side of things. What are our biggest strengths, what are our biggest weaknesses?

Offense: I like the nucleus of talent we have on this side of the ball. Assuming we resign Lamar Miller, I think we are pretty much set when it comes to skill positions. I like the potential that Ajayi and Miller have as a 1,2 punch. Obviously the biggest hole is the offensive line. We lack talent on the line and we lack depth. Getting the OL has to be a top priority and I think we need to make a strong push to sign Brandon Brooks this off-season. There are a lot of other guys that can be had for depth but we need to put a concerted effort into dominating in the trenches. I got one would like to see us transition more into a run heavy offense. We have a great contrast of lighting and thunder at the RB position, we need a coach who's going to make it a priority to run the damn ball. I think we can all agree that the finesse thing failed miserably. Tannehill doesn t need to be back there throwing the ball fifty times a game - that's not hisblane. The right coaching staff and upgraded OL and commitment to running the football will go a long way for us....

Defense: This is a little more difficult because our back seven is down right ugly. No way around it. We have a stud back at safety in Reshad Jones, a pretty good linebacker in Jelani Jenkins, a CB who's a solid number two but seems to be fading in Brent Grimes and a serviceable LB in Misi. We have a lot of work to do on this side of the ball. Some guys we need to target in free agency: Janoris Jenkins CB, Brandon Marshall LB, Eric Berry S and a lot of guys we could use for depth. Id like to see us make a run at JPP to bolster the pass rush as well. We need to draft defense in the draft and we need immediate contributions. Id like us to go Hargraeves/Jaylon Smith in the first round and BPA at LB/CB depending on who we draft in the first. I think we need to double down at CB. How bout moving Brice McCain back to his natural position in the slot? Because he failed miserably as a boundary defender. I like what I've seen out of Bobby McCain as far as determination - I think with reps he can turn out to be a solid player for us. I want Lippett to get some run for the remainder of the season to see what we have there. If we draft right and hit on some draft picks there's no reason we can't be a lot better on both sides of the ball.

Crazy things happen in the NFL. Sometimes teams that were awful the year before rise from the ashes and wind up being solid teams, looks at the NYJ, Vikings, Falcons etc... Its not all doom and gloom my fellow Dolfans but it's going to take a calculated mind making decisions for us. First task is finding the right Coach to lead this team and together he and the GM need to get on the same page, have a vision and make it happen.

I applaud the enthusiasm and optimism but we've been saying this for well Over a decade and have come up short every year. Practically every year were "this much closer" and "There's always next year" but always come short. I've come to the point where I need to stop letting my expectations get so high and need to let them prove it to me before I get on the hype train.

LOL.

This team, on paper, was supposed to make the playoffs without question.

AFC is hot trash. .500 teams are in the playoffs and below .500 are in the hunt.

Yet here's Miami, totally out of the playoffs with all of this talent. Nothing has changed.

We're [STRIKE] just as close[/STRIKE] a lot closer to being looked at as one of the jokes of the league, like the Browns, Jags or Raiders than being close to turning the corner.

I respectfully disagree. We're very talented on offense, have some holes in defense no doubt but I think the biggest thing that was missing was coaching and leadership

You're entitled to your opinion, even though this same thing is posted every year around this time - however, I mostly disagree with you. For the moment lets ignore the QB position since we know he'll be back next year, but you're looking at almost an entire defense that is in dire need of upgrading. Most of the dline is trash, minus Suh whose contract eats up a lot and Philiips who "might" be a good longterm player, the LB corps is pure garbage (which we knew going in), the secondary is pure garbage minus an aging CB in Grimes (who won't be around much longer and thus we need to have a plan in place) and the one bright spot of the secondary an in his prime Rashad Jones - I just hope his prime isn't wasted the way other defensive studs were like JT, Cam Wake, etc.

Cam Wake, IF he is even able to come back will be a situational player at best, there isn't a realistic expectation that at his age he'll come back anywhere near as close to what he was pre-injury, and so far the closest thing we have to an end is Olivier Vernon who very well may end up elsewhere next year.

Add to the fact that we'll also be bringing in a new defensive coordinator next year, and this defense is basically going to need a complete overhaul and its not even remotely doable in one offseason.

The oline should be upgraded somewhat next year, but how much and how quickly it improves remains to be seen. As far as WR/RB go, I'm happy with those positions. And while the TE position is OK, it could definitely use an upgrade although I wouldn't exhaust resources next year on that as we have so many holes to fill it would be almost as bad as trading up to draft Dion Jordan when there were a ton of holes to fill even back then. You're also saying "we're very talented on offense", but so far its been entirely on PAPER. They still struggle to put up points every single week, which is the same song and dance we've been watching through the last couple of FO/coaching staffs.

I hope you're right, and for some reason the vast majority of the "starters" on this team just weren't trying this year and next year magically become studs and prove me wrong. But I'm not betting on it, this is a team in need of a major overhaul any way you cut it - the problem is until ownership really accepts that this team will continue to spin its tires in the same mudhole it's been stuck in for the last decade plus.

Ding, ding, ding. If your O-line blows it doesn't matter if you add 20 receivers in the offseason. If your secondary and LB corps suck it doesn't matter if you have the best DT in the NFL. There's definite talent on this roster, it's just surrounded with definite ****.

Nothing wrong with having hope, but I'll go with Suh's assessment of this team over any fan's. And I tend to agree that there's really only a couple handfuls of guys on our current squad that are fit to take the field with him. Suh, Landry, Reshad, Shelby, Juwaun, Albert, Pounce, Ajayi, Stills, Matthews, Miller, and Grimes. Not including Vernon since he will want more than he's worth next season. Some question marks are Turner, Tannehill, Vigil, Jenkins, Phllips, Fede. I say scrap the rest and start over.

Precisely. How many teams currently have as long of a streak without a playoff victory as we do? How many teams have only been to the playoffs one time in that same time span?

While I agree that a good head coaching hire will certainly help I have zero, actually less than zero, confidence in Steve Ross. He is incompetant when it comes to this process. Sorry Steve, you might be very smart when it comes to real estate but you are a total boob when it comes to this team. Most of us feel you should sell the team, but are hopeful you have learned how over your head you are and step aside and let the football people do their job. Meddling owners are losing owners, and you proved it once again. You can now join Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder as the three stooges.

How many notice. Before all this spending of money and what some think were great draft picks we were an 8-8 team. This FO never addresses the real problems. You have an owner who does not have a clue and brought in a jackass from new York that nearly burned the jets to the ground.Don't mean to offend you but I don't see this closer than you think thing. We are quickly becoming the biggest laughing stock the nfl has ever seen.
