What a Good GM might do in the 2025 Miami draft

I'm going to assume Grier and McD will be sent packing after the season and one of the directives of the new GM is adding toughness and elements to this roster and certain position groups that it doesn't have.

I'm also going to stop bagging on Tua, we're joined at the hip with him for the next 2-4 years. Don't dislike him, just don't buy into the idea that he's part of the solution but do think if we give him more, we'll get more out of him.

IDL
Problem: You lost Wilkins and have replaced him with a series of guys who have played OK but lack special traits. Campbell probably gone and a better pass rush push is needed whether Calais re-signs or retires
Solution: Mason Graham DT Michigan

Where: Round 1 and a few more losses would help make this happen

IOL:
Problem: complete lack of size, athleticism, power, talent (am I missing anything)

Solution: Ohio State guard Donovan Jackson not the quickest feet but strong and can anchor. Moves well enough, played in a pro style offense. Was the #1 guard coming out of high school, hasn't quite lived up to that, I think he probably goes later than people think

Where: round 2 or 3

Backup QB:
Problem: McD has brought in a series of backups with limited ability like Skylar Thompson or career backups on the downside of their career like Mike White and Tim Boyle or Snoop Huntley. Thompson never developed in 4 years and is probably what you should expect when you take a 7th rounder who didn't play against a lot of top talent in college. Get a guy with some special qualities who has played against top competition to backup Tua

Solution: Garrett Nussmeier LSU, an athletic kid with a big arm who isn't afraid to make a throw into a tight window, can be turnover prone but I think his experience in the LSU offense, the arm talent and all the big games he played make him a really good prospect and a future starter
Round 3

Power RB
Problem: too many third and shorts have to be run out of the shotgun or turn into difficult conversions where Tua has to scramble for his life or make a throw to a tightly covered receiver. We dumped Chris Brooks, don't use Jeff Wilson and don't want to have to over-use Devon Achane.

Solution: Phil Mufa Clemson a power back who can move the pile but has speed and wiggle. can also catch and pass protect
Round 4

All around ( and reliable) TE
Problem: Jonnu Smith is a great and has added a huge dimension to the offense. he's an H-Back though and doesn't really block. I think waiting for Tanner Conner or the penalty and drop/fumble machine Julian Hill to develop is like waiting for Kim Kardashian to win a Nobel Prize. Durham Smythe is past his sell by date imo, I don't think he gives you enough in either area of the game. Having a real two TE set would give this team more options. I have to think the new GM and coach will look at this unit and say, yeah, not tough or good enough.

Solution: Mason Taylor LSU, Gunner Helm Texas, Oscar Delp Georgia
Taylor: big, strong, fast, can block, great team guy and will abuse DBs at the next level: round 2-3
Helm: tall, strong, great red zone weapon, he's the Longhorns receiving TE but can block
Delp: sat behind Brock Bowers, always could block but has become a receiving weapon in the last half of the season, made some huge plays in big games, can be drafted later than the first two guys

Rounds 2-5, wide range I know but this is a valuable position and I think teams are looking for a guy like Sam LaPorta who some say was over-drafted in round 2 but he soon proved them all wrong becoming one of the best TEs in the NFL.

Going to look at safeties and LBs next as I think they should be high priorities positions in the next draft
I just turned on the LSU game to watch this Nussmeier QB.

I like Nussmeier as a fit for our offense but the guy makes boneheaded decisions. If we add a legit veteran and Nuss and then roster 3 QB, that could work.

Keeping an 11th DB or whatever instead of a third QB is not smart for a team with QB durability concerns. Wrecked our season.

I am struggling to get past the part where Grier and McDaniel are sent packing. As much as I would like to see Grier go, I can't see a scenario where Ross would do that.
Agree. Next year both Grier and McDaniel are on a very hot seat. But would be shocked if Ross makes that decision this year.

I like the draft, OP. This team has to get more physical with a concentration mostly on defense.

Mason Taylor is Jason Taylor's son for those who don't know that. He's an interesting prospect at TE, as is Oronde Gadsden II, another son of a former Dolphin player. Gadsden could be a mismatch nightmare in the passing game. But he won't help much as a blocker.

Gunnar Helm of Texas could be a good TE option in the 4th or 5th round. He had 42 receptions for 544 yards and 5 TD's coming into tonights game. He has another 6 receptions for 56 yards in tonights game. He is also a good blocker.

Gadsden doesn't have the size to be an NFL TE but he could still be a good WR.

Ross is not a patient man, he wasn't with a number of coaches who were bad hires and who didn't grow and improve as coaches. I think I'm throwing McDaniel in the second group. I don't think he's as bad coach but I know he has not learned from his mistakes and improved his play calling, game management or development of players.

I think this team being called soft by players, current and former, and by the media is a big deal. Hell, a respected defensive coordinator called us soft on his way to Philly and nobody listened, I think they're listening now. Fangio took shots at McD's coaching style too, It was subtle for Vic but it was clear he didn't think this was a tough team or one that practiced hard.

There's just no way around the idea that we're soft because this is the environment the head coach has created and fostered. We're not going to practice hard, we're not going to hold guys accountable when they screw up game after game.

Ross wanted to hire Jim Harbaugh for years. You can't tell me he's not looking at what's going with the LAC and how Coach Khaki has transformed the marshmallows Brandon Staley coached into a much tougher team, mentally and physically. They are now built to run the ball and play great defense in any weather which is not something they could say in the past.

I hated the pick of Joe Alt over Bowers or Nabers but at least Harbaugh has a philosophy that works and Alt was a better fit for that. I'd still like to see what Bowers would be playing with a better QB like Herbert.

we are the 2022 Chargers. Talent in spots but bad coaching, lackadaisical players and a GM who couldn't spot a great player if his life depended on it.

This is going to be a 8-9 season at best. I don't see the point in keeping either the GM who has been a butcher or the HC and I don't think a good GM is going to be fine with working for McDaniel for a year or two.

I liked McDaniel but the quirky nerd act wears thin when you are constantly getting your ass whipped every time you play a good team.

Go out and get a Detoit or KC personnel guy and let him pick his coach. Waiting another year and letting Grier butcher another draft would be colossally dumb, even by Ross' standards.

OL and DL until we’ve built both properly.

We have our QB - regardless of what you think of him.

We could turn things around with one good OL and DL draft.
wow, did you watch the display of tackling that didn't happen on Thanksgving night? I'd be really happy if we had a real GM who drafted defense at every level including DT, LB, S and corner. Much more important than drafting a guard in rounds 1, 2 or 3

Who do we have in the back 7 next year? a bunch of waived players, rejects and late round picks. should we bring back Jordan Poyer and Kader Kohou on cheap deals? Or keep putting slow duds at linebackers and continue to get crushed by tight ends year after year.

This obsession with OL, OL, OL is futile, especially if we have the same two clowns in charge of bringing in these offensive linemen.

Yeah, I think Gadsden is around 230. Faster than his dad, but with those same reliable hands. Could be a fit for Miami.

I'll have to check out Helm.

I don't think Jackson fits the ZBS.
Miami's o-line problems started when Philbin introduced his fancy, finesse zone-blocking schemes. The same o-linemen who were decent against tough, physical d-lines under Sparano were mostly pushed around and dominated by those same d-lines under Philbin. So, the players weren't the problem, it was the ineffective blocking schemes.

And now, McDaniel is even more finesse-oriented than Philbin was, and this current o-line is much weaker than Philbin's. IMO, this is why they struggle to convert 3rd or 4th and short on the ground, especially near the goal line.
