As a Louisiania native and diehard football fan, I've seen coaches come and go through this state - whether it be at LSU, with the Saints, or even at Tulane. And let me just tell you guys that the job Ditka did in New Orleans and the job Saban did in Baton Rouge are on such opposite ends of the spectrum that it's almost impossible to describe.

Whereas Ditka posed with Ricky Williams in a wedding shot for a magazine, Saban took a 3-8 rag-tag group of infighting malcontents at LSU and turned them into SEC champions in 2 years and national champions in 4.

Ditka complained openly to the national media about what an ugly city New Orleans was; Saban was known to chew out players for commiting penalties even when the Tigers led by 50 points with 2 minutes left in the game.

Ditka was fined by the NFL for flashing money and settling a wager with his defensive coordinator on the sideline about whether Tim Brown could be stopped; Saban transformed LSU into a first class football program with sparkling facilities that continue to shine today and will have an everlasting impact on the success of the football team.

Ditka went 15-33 with the Saints, and left the program on a 3-13 note; Saban preached discipline and toughness and took up for his players during his first season when LSU fans booed during the tough times in the early part of the season.

So it came across to this Baton Rougean as quite absurd when I read about Ditka's reaction to Saban's press conference and his comments that Saban should "find another job". Ditka doesn't have a clue. He has no idea that it's the process, not the results, that need to be focused upon.

Come to think of it Ditka fits right in with Michael Irvin and the rest of those clowns that ESPN calls NFL analysts. And Saban for his part is right where he belongs and will bring a Super Bowl Championship to Miami if the organization heeds his message and focuses on the right thing. Fins Nation, in these difficult times, which of these two are you gonna listen to?...

Thanks for your inspiring post during these tough times. Things will improve...

(Though I have to admit Ricky looks damn good in that wedding dress... :goof: )

Mike Ditka is a hall of fame player and a damn good coach. To call him a clown is ignorant. Just because he doesnt agree with Saban's philosophy doesnt mean he doesnt know what he was talking about. Look at what has happened to the bears since he left. They went from winning a super bowl and going to the playoffs every year, to making the playoffs 2 times in 10 years.

I'm fully aware of Ditka's playing career and his success as a coach in the Windy City.

But the way in which he conducted himself during his time in Louisiana and the way he represented the New Orleans Saints organization was a complete and utter joke.

The job he did in N.O. makes me think that perennial Pro Bowlers Walter Payton, Neil Anderson, Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Steve "Mongo" McMichael, Wilbur Marshall, Jim Covert, Jay Hilgenberg, and Dave Duerson, among others, had as much to do with the Bears' mini-dynasty of the 1980s as anything else.

im not sure i get the comparison.

is it because ditka was critical of saban's PC? thats his job

is this about who did better in LA? fine. there isnt a single coach who has done well in NO.

saban has proved he was a great college coach, not a great NFL coach.

ditka won a super bowl. he is a tough-as-nails guy who crafted his team in his image.

i still dont get the comparison

Simply put, the point is that both guys inherited losing programs, and Ditka's time with the Saints was bush league, and Saban's time with LSU was first class in every sense of the term.

So it's a little odd for Ditka to criticize Saban for focusing on process rather than results.

saban did a great job, no question. and ditka's decision to go to the worst franchise in history was a bad move. and he clearly failed. posing in that picture i dont mind. remember, he's not the guy in the dress. :D

i still think that ditka has every right to criticise because a) he is paid by ESPN to do so and b) winning a super bowl and coaching a dominant team for 6 years gives him a place to criticize a rookie coach who is trying to find his way in the NFL

That, and Buddy Ryan's 4-6 DEFENSE! Ditka had no clue. Great player, but lousy coach who got lucky with awesome talent on the Bears squad.

I think some people are going to have trouble understanding Saban's emphasis on process over results. Ditka has always seemed to me to be a pretty brawny guy without much intellectual sophistication. He may be one who has trouble. I doubt Belichick has any trouble.
