As a Louisiania native and diehard football fan, I've seen coaches come and go through this state - whether it be at LSU, with the Saints, or even at Tulane. And let me just tell you guys that the job Ditka did in New Orleans and the job Saban did in Baton Rouge are on such opposite ends of the spectrum that it's almost impossible to describe.
Whereas Ditka posed with Ricky Williams in a wedding shot for a magazine, Saban took a 3-8 rag-tag group of infighting malcontents at LSU and turned them into SEC champions in 2 years and national champions in 4.
Ditka complained openly to the national media about what an ugly city New Orleans was; Saban was known to chew out players for commiting penalties even when the Tigers led by 50 points with 2 minutes left in the game.
Ditka was fined by the NFL for flashing money and settling a wager with his defensive coordinator on the sideline about whether Tim Brown could be stopped; Saban transformed LSU into a first class football program with sparkling facilities that continue to shine today and will have an everlasting impact on the success of the football team.
Ditka went 15-33 with the Saints, and left the program on a 3-13 note; Saban preached discipline and toughness and took up for his players during his first season when LSU fans booed during the tough times in the early part of the season.
So it came across to this Baton Rougean as quite absurd when I read about Ditka's reaction to Saban's press conference and his comments that Saban should "find another job". Ditka doesn't have a clue. He has no idea that it's the process, not the results, that need to be focused upon.
Come to think of it Ditka fits right in with Michael Irvin and the rest of those clowns that ESPN calls NFL analysts. And Saban for his part is right where he belongs and will bring a Super Bowl Championship to Miami if the organization heeds his message and focuses on the right thing. Fins Nation, in these difficult times, which of these two are you gonna listen to?...
