This is just a question to the board. What about Sean Jones at safety?

He is a UFA had shortened season in 08, played fairly good coming off his injury last season.

Has not been resigned by the Eagles as of yet.

He can tackle and is good covering the pass.

Here is what sportingnews.com had to say about him at the start of the 09 season:

"14. Sean Jones, Eagles. This former Pro Bowler is a ferocious tackler who had 14 interceptions over his last three seasons in Cleveland. Though he is coming off a knee injury, the good news is he can play either safety spot, and if healthy, can deliver 100 tackles and five picks every season."

It is worth a long look especially if we can dump Wilson (assuming no CBA). The young corners need some help and with NT, ILB, OLB all needing attention I would like to see some money spent on a free agent or two somewhere on D and then draft your projects in the latter rounds.

He would be an instant up grade to the pass coverage and benefit run support as well.

Opinions?

Is he a free safety? I thought he was a strong safety.

I think Sean Jones would be a decent signing -- definitely an upgrade over Gibril but not anything worth getting excited for.

He was a HUGE disappointment for the Eagles this season....

they talk about him the way we talk about Gibril Wilson.

Yea but unlike Gibril he was coming off a knee injury. His play the two season prior to that was much better then Wilson even produced.

There is no way he can be worse then Wilson, wow! I mean you can not find a good thing to say about the way he played.

...so the best you can say about SJ is that he was coming off injury??

Gibril Wilson was on a Super Bowl winning defense within the last 2 years.

Make no mistake, I think he was overall MISERABLE for us this year.

we need an upgrade, but SJ isn't the answer.

he even rated below Gibril (73 of 87 to be exact):

...and he wound up losing his starting job to a rookie converted CB.

i think he is a SS but just like what we did with Wilson this year they are playing in the wrong spot on there teams

And that is why I posted it as a question and not a statement. You have to weight a few things here,

First - Wilson isn't the answer. Before you make any off season acquisition you must acknowledge Wilson is not getting any more chances to prove himself a competent starter and CBA or not he is out.

Second – If Wilson is going to be given a second chance to prove he just didn’t get the system then why pay money for redundancy. Wavier and the draft is the way to bring in competition at the safety spot.

Third – regardless of the first and second points you are drafting help at the safety position, it just matters what round pick you are willing to use, 2nd 3rd verse 6th 7th.

I personally feel Jones will bounce back, will he improve enough to risk the signing, dunno.

I guess if you look strictly at profootballfocus we don’t need any help at the safety position. I mean if you are going to get a new safety cut Bell according to the stats, right? Wilson is 15th out of 87 while Bell is 33rd out of 87.

I'm not looking strictly at profootballfocus....I was first and foremost basing my opinion off of a) the fact that he got benched for Macho Harris late in the year and b) what I hear from Eagle fans and Philly media who watched every game. profootballfocus just reinforced that he wasn't very good.

Yea it's just one of those positions this off season that no real options are available. Nose is the other. I hope they can pick up a free agent Nose and draft a decent Safety to split or beat out Wilson.

Or who knows maybe one more year in the system and we will all be saying “glad we didn’t get rid of Wilson” but I guess I just don’t see that happening. He played so lost on the field it wasn’t even funny at times.

I live up here (Near Philly) and Sean Jones had some flashes of decent play and can make some nice Picks but, he platooned with a rookie FS who was i believe late round or FA pick up so i say no.

I didn't watch him play, living in NY I get inundated with Buffalo and the Jets. It seems to me based on public opinion it would not fix the situation and at best a shot in the dark. We already got burned on one of those so…….

very true i live near philly..there safety situation is the exact same just two good strong safetys who cant cover

Jones is more of a Culver type player than a starting FS.

He is just tooo slow.

Besides, as much as wish they would cut or trade Wilson, I think they will keep him another year. He actually graded out really high last year. He and Ginn just made their worst mistakes at the worst time.

Hey you know what maybe Wilson and Nolan will be a match made in heaven and something will snap in his brain and this will be moot next season. Nolan seams to have been good at reinventing people. I guess that is best case scenario or maybe Clemons will come on strong and fit the FS roll nicely.

I will tell you this as bad as everyone thinks the safety play was last season, it was no near as bad as the pass coverage of the linebackers. ILB should be addressed this offseason first. IMO.
