With guys like Asomugha, Gamble, Suggs, Haynesworth, possibly Roy Williams (safety) etc out there. What are they chances we actually get more then one of these guys. We need to re-sign Carey, with Roth and Crowder being UFA's as well. Do we have the cap room, and do we believe the NFL will soon be uncapped?

The jets spent a ton of money and were able to get it all under the cap.

Can and will we do it?

Name me the last team that signed a bunch of big names and then parlayed that into a deep run in the playoffs?

Also, why would you use the Jets as an example? They're 3-3 and just lost to the Raiders.

"What are the chances we sign a bunch of big names?"

-- Very low. Maybe a guy or 2 from that list... if we're lucky.

Ireland seems to like to sign backups through free agency, and hopefully draft the starter to displace this new guy that we just signed.

Sometimes it's a nice idea to sign a probowler via free agency, and focus your draft on other needs.

I mean if you can identify before your draft, that there are 2 pro-bowl WR's out there ... it's kind of nice to take one and keep that first round pick for another position of need. 1st round WR's seems to have a low success rate (see Ted Ginn). :)

-- The 49ers did that and won a superbowl once (With Deion Sanders). Last year, New England signed Moss, Stallworth, and Welker... that one turned out pretty well.

In year two, I think we will target one big name, but mostly go with the cheaper veteran options. This team is for the most part going to be built through the draft, but I definitely see them making a run at a guy like Nnamdi Asomugha.

We are set pretty good going into next offseason. We have rebuilt the front lines on both sides of the ball and have our QB of the future(Henne) already on the roster learning the ropes. Now we can focus on WRs, linebackers and the secondary. With a lot of cap room again and 9 draft picks(3 in the first two rounds), we have a good chance to make a major jump for 09'.

I'd say slim to none. I could see one big signing, but not multiple. Look at the Cowboys. There is proof that having a chunk of big name players doesn't necessarily equate wins......

It depends on how we finish. If we go 7-9 or 8-8, and are only a couple players away, then we may spend money. We have a LOT of cap room. But, if we finish with 6 wins or less I think we will stay on the current plan of focusing more on the draft and saving cap room.

So let's see, signing one player qualifies as "signing a bunch of big names?" (49ers)

As for the Patriots, they were already going deep into the playoffs and beyond prior to making those signings. Please tell me that you don't really believe this to be a legitimate example. You're better than that, bud.

The scenario facing the Dolphins is a team that is trying to get back to relevancy. They're not a dynasty like the 49ers and Patriots teams you mentioned.

So I'll ask again: When was the last time a team built a contender based on spending a lot of money for free agents?

I'm cool with making a run at a couple of young free agents. But not aging vets. As Nubs said, most of this is gonna be built thru the draft.

asomugha is gonna cost $100 mil probably if he's free. didn't the 9ers just give a corner like $85 mil and he wasn't on asomughas level???

i'd love to have him but the raiders are crazy to let him get away. god knows we need him.

So did Moss, Stallworth, and Welker made NE a playoff team? Yep, don't think so. I think they had a guy named Brady there before that played quite well for them. Also, I could be mistaken, but I think they had a pretty decent defense for a few years before last year.

Anyways....to answer Hugo's question:

The Raiders made it to the Super Bowl by doing it. Although they lost, and have sucked since then.

Before last year, Welker wasnt a superstar(still isn't), and Moss wasnt proven either.
