With 6 days until the biggest Dolphins game of (perhaps) the Millennium, it seems like forever. I have never been less excited about Christmas in my life.
We've won games in many different ways this season. We destroyed the Pats in Foxboro. We squeaked by teams like the Seahawks, Rams, Bills, 49ers, and Chiefs. We played great defense against Denver and San Diego, two great offenses.
That said, what are YOUR 4 keys to making the playoffs after a 1-15 season, knocking out the hated Jets that were 8-3 just a few weeks ago?
1. Contain Leon Washington. He is by far the most dangerous threat to score on the Jets. Our special teams coverage that was a huge liability earlier in the year has miraculously become reliable. Not letting him get big kick returns, and not giving him a chance to return punts, will be big. The longer the field in front of Favre, the more likely for him to make a mistake and also take some hits. When Leon is on the field on offense, always be on the look out for the screen pass.
2. Stop the run. I am a lot more afraid of Thomas Jones than I am of Brett Favre. In Week 1, people like to point to the lucky Favre lob to Stuckey for a TD that cost us the loss. But watching that game, it seemed like every time Jones got the ball he would either pick up 5 yards on first down, or get the first down on 2nd or 3rd. He finished with almost 5 YPC -- 101 yards on 22 carries and a TD that hurt a lot. Limiting him to less than 4 YPC Sunday will force the Jets to throw more, and like with Key #1, gives Favre more opportunities to get hit and to make mistakes.
3. Distribution of the ball among the running backs. Ronnie Brown is one of the most talented players in the league, made the Pro Bowl despite sharing carries for the entire season, and has game-changing ability. The Dolphins are 9-3 when he gets more carries than Ricky, and 2 of those losses were against Houston and New England -- losses that were hardly the fault of the offense. Don't get me wrong, I love Ricky and will be wearing his #34 aqua to the Meadowlands on Sunday, but he is not Ronnie Brown. Was anyone else wishing we were gonna give the ball to Ronnie or Cobbs on the drive that Ricky fumbled? I was afraid. It pains me when Ronnie gets like 6 carries for an entire game.
Speaking of Cobbs, I would also like to see him touch the ball more. It seems like someting big happens every time he gets it. The 2 long TD receptions against Houston, and the reverse vs the Chiefs come to mind. Also, that play where CP fakes the toss to Ronnie and gives it to Cobbs for the counter seems to be averaging like 10 YPC this season. I think an ideal number of touches among our running backs would be something in the neighborhood of: Ronnie-15, Cobbs-10, Ricky-10.
4. Play-calling. While I love what Dan Henning has brought to this team, excitement, unpredicablity, dynamics, and I'm not just talking about the Wildcat, I have been screaming at my TV on a few occassions this season at some of the play calls. The 4th and 1 fade to Joey Haynos in windy conditions was absolutely baffling. They called a timeout to draw THAT up? Really? Also, until Polite doesn't convert a 3rd or 4th and 1, they need to give it to him. Every time. What is he, 9/9 now?
Also, it seems like the toss play, especially to Ricky, is averaging about -4 YPC. I'd rather see him take a conventional hand-off off-tackle or between Alleman and Long on the left side rather than the tosses and end-arounds and crap.
Well, that's all I got for now. If you made it this far, thanks for reading. Sunday cannot get here fast enough.
Post your own 4 keys to victory, or discuss mine. Smart-*** remarks like "score more points" are not needed -- thanks!
