I am looking for ideas of what he may have done wrong, that needs to be done better or differently in the future.

One thing would be to turn over Gm responsibilities souly to Randy Mueller to make the calls on personnel, but get Nicks in put of course. This would take a lot of work load off of Nick.

Two would be Nick to take a good look at his staff, escpecially offensive coordinator, and find a better fit.

Three would have to be try to see what you have on the roster the rest of the year, and if players can get some more playing time aka Cleo, Roth, Evans, Vickerson to better evaluate for 2007, so we have the least amount of questions as far as personnel.

Let's hear your insights!

I agree that it's time to see what the young players can do, especially the guys you mentioned. Evans and Vickerson looked good in preseason, but we need to know if they can play past August. If they do show potential, the defensive line becomes a little less of a priority during free agency and in next April's draft.

I think we've seen enough of Joey Harrington to know that he's not the answer here in Miami. He's a hell of a guy and someone I'd love to have a beer with, but not a QB to build a franchise around. I say give Cleo a shot. If he plays well, he can compete for the backup spot next year.

And finally, Coach Saban needs to start hitting home runs in the draft. The guys who he has drafted and who have played have been solid, but not spectacular. No more projects or "Hudson Houck favorites". We need guys that can come in and make an impact.

Nice post bro. That is another reason I want to give Randy all the GM responsibilites, so Nick can concentrate on just coaching, and getting the right coaches in here.

Thanks! Very nice thread you have here!

I never really thought about Mueller taking over as full GM, but now that I do, it makes perfect sense. As you said, it gives Coach Saban more time to gameplan and work with the players. Mueller has a proven track record of nabbing offensive playmakers, especially quarterbacks.

I don't get why people suddenly want Saban to lose his power over personnel acquisition. The rookies he's drafted--Brown, Daniels, Jason Allen, Roth, among many others--have been solid and are improving with each game and season. Culpepper is a Pro Bowler recovering from an injury. Wilkinson has been so effective that people can scarcely tell when he's subbing for Traylor. LJ Shelton has turned out to be effective at Right Guard. I can go on, but the point has been made.

Wannstedt and Spielman ran this franchise into the ground. They gave away draft picks like candy for players who didn't pan out. They sank all of our salary cap money into an aging defense. They have created a multi-year mess. The one year in which we finally have some salary cap room--this coming offseason--coincides with 20+ players on our roster becoming RFAs, and many more teams in the NFL getting even more salary cap space than we have.

It took Chicago six years to recover from Wannstedt's ineptitude. Why do we expect miracles in two? Can we finally stop blaming Nick Saban for our own delusions of winning the Super Bowl at home this year? Can we please stop proving the idea that Dolphins fans are the least loyal and most spoiled fans in the NFL?

cali , i love your ideas because i was thinking if we could get a good offensive cordinator and we tweek the defense that would be the best thing for us. i am hoping saban will address the oline and dline and then use f/a to adress the secondary. as for the receiving corp i think we should either draft d'jaun woods and bring in randy moss or we should draft the best receiver we can and cut hagan or move him to special teams.
special teams is a big area that needs some speed on it. now would hagan have the speed to be a return guy. it will be wise to consider drafting a rb or a f/a rb . the oline and qb is my biggest concern ,yet i dont know what you guys think but we have a inept offense and our defense isnt that bad . mularkey must go regardless of what other areas that is lacking.

I agree with your points FFIC. Great thread idea.

The others I would do would be to make Lenoard Davis my target free agent. LT is one of the most important positions on the field and if we had a wall there that would do wonders for our offense.

That's my biggest target for the offense and as for the defense I say sign a corner like Clements if it's affordable. If not, draft one in the first round. Lets try to find our Champ Bailey.

He needs to look at this offense long and hard and realise it's devoid of playmakers. We have no playmaking reciever or tightend and we still have a mess at the QB position. He needs to look at his offensive coaches and make changes where neccesary. He needs to give personell control over to Randy Mueller and he must hire a STRONG offensive coordinator that he can trust to run this offense.

Saban might be a defensive genius but his offensive ineptitude requires a coordinator he can trust to take control of the offense and make the neccesary changes. Every good leader has a supporting cast to make up for thier shortcomings and in the end I think Saban needs to hire people he can trust and delegate responsibilities to them to handle the facets he is not strongest in.

It's not about trashing Coach Saban or winning Super Bowls. The truth is that we are one of the older teams in the league. Our best players are in the late stages of their careers. That's not a good sign. Coach Saban's drafts have been pretty good, but if you look at the recent Super Bowl teams, they were all built with very good drafts and selective and wise free agency moves. So while I'm not bashing the Dolphins for not being in the Super Bowl this year, I am saying we need to start building the foundation with players, not projects.

Saban has brought in only one project: Manny Wright. And Saban admitted that project failed when he put Wright on the PUP list.

I don't get how you expect rookies to immediately contribute. Excepting perhaps the top five draft picks, all rookies take time to grow into the NFL. This is true regardless of whatever team they're drafted to. Rare is the rookie who makes an immediate and enormous impact.

I look at Saban's drafts and see players who will continue our ability to dominate on defense after Taylor, Thomas, Traylor, and our other defensive impact players retire. I see promise on the offense, where we've acquired a Pro Bowl quarterback recovering from injury, a powerful running back whose biggest fault is that the OC isn't calling running plays, the all-time Pac-10 reception leader suffering from a case of rookie season nerves, and a fairly high first-round pick in a draft absolutely loaded with talent on both sides of the ball.

It took Chicago six years to recover from Wannstedt. We certainly aren't going to recover in two. Give it a rest.

Another fine post by you sir, and I think you sum it up right there with Saban turning the GM duties over to Mueller. I think he's done alright with Free Agency in getting veteran leadership with limited cap space. But look at the drafts, in '05 he at least had Spielman's aid in drafting, whatever aid that was and landed us 3 starters and Roth, who should be starting next year. This year's crop didn't exactly measure up. But I agree 110% with you in that he should turn the GM duties over to Mueller.

You can go back to every post I've ever made here and I've supported Coach Saban 100%, so please don't tell me to "Give it a rest."

I and other reasonable Dolphins fans didn't expect a Super Bowl this year. You are right in that you don't undo five years of Wannstedt and Spielman in two.

Where I disagree with you is not expecting rookies to have an impact. In this era of free agency and shorter contracts, you can't wait three or four years for players to develop. Otherwise you're just playing farm team for the rest of the NFL.

And Manny Wright was not the only project pick for the Dolphins. Anthony Alabi was a "Hudson Houck favorite" when he was drafted in 2005. He didn't play in a game until this year and has looked less than impressive when he has played. The only way he can improve is with experience and that means starting games, not getting thrown in there when Damion Macintosh needs a breather. I also believe Joe Toledo was picked higher than he should have been because of his inexperience and health issues. I know that he reportedly looked good in training camp, but Dolphins training camp history is littered with guys who looked great in camp, such as Fred Gibson and Kirby Dar Dar.

And while I am hoping and praying that Daunte Culpepper regains his past form and becomes a really good player again, I wouldn't say I'm excited about it. More like nervously crossing my fingers and hoping it works out. We are SCREWED if he can't.

So I hope you understand that questioning coaching and personnel moves does not make you a poor fan. I think if you were able to talk to Coach Saban one on one as friend to friend, he would agree that he has made some mistakes. He's human and he's only in his second year of being an NFL head coach. I think he's a very good coach and naming Randy Mueller GM would help Coach Saban TREMENDOUSLY, since he never had to worry about free agency or the draft during his time with the Cleveland Browns, Michigan State and LSU.

Saban should:

1. Do more than look at his coaching position as a job and lighten up with players and become more of a leader than a coach.

2. Sadly, he should get Mularkey out of here. You do not go for stupid trick plays at inept times! Keep momentum going in drives by sticking to what's working! Don't be afraid to make the offense a LITTLE more vertical!

3. Get some youth and talent on the defensive side of the ball by taking players that are proven gamers and off the field leaders. FOCUS MORE on the offensive line and defensive backfield, SPECIFICALLY DEPTH IN THE G and C positions, a true LT!, BIG PLAY BIG CBS!, and some young RAW OLBs! Maybe a good WR through FA as well, even a superstar!

4. Put the best QB product possible on the field!
