There's a link on ESPN.com to an audio clip of Chris Mortensen talking about why the Dolphins backed away from Brees and went for Culpepper, as well as how it affects the upcoming draft. Unfortunately, I'm behind a firewall at work that won't let me listen to it. :tantrum:

Can someone please post a summary? Thanks.

That we felt better with Culpepper's knee then they did about Bree's shoulder (partial torn rotator cuff) and his therefore his guaranteed money and risk factor. Also, that Scott talked to Saban about Culpepper last year.

What Mortenson said, made me feel alot better about this deal. Apparently Brees wasn't our first choice. Brees and Culpepper were on the same level, but that Vikings officials wouldn't allow our doctors to get in there and examining him for fear of devaluing him or waiting until the release him and sign him. He said Miami thoughts were the same as his, other scouts, officials, and coaches in the league that it is better to take a chance on a QB coming off a knee surgery rather than one with a shoulder surgery. He said Brees was asking too much, so we went with Culpepper. He then talked about draft implications since the Saints got Brees.

Isn't it funny. All this time it seemed that Brees was playing Miami when in fact he was their second choice to begin with.

haha!

Yea, seems like they wanted to compare Brees to their first choice before deciding. Awesome. So who stats the season if Gus is gone? Cleo?

I don't buy this line of thinking one bit.
If Daunte was our first choice we would have gone after him as our primary choice.

The amount of time and effort the Phins put into Brees including flying to Birmingham before he could visit N.O. cleary shows Brees was our first choice.

I love the way he never lets the left hand know what the right hand is doing.

He didn't say anything about CULPEPPER being the #1 choice ...

It was merely - why would you pay a guy who injured his throwing shoulder 8-10 MIL per year ... when you could pay a guy who injured his knee at a much lower price [like half] ...

I am not a big CULPEPPER fan ... but nor did I think that BREES was the 2d coming. IF BREES would have signed for ~ 6 MIL per year ... BREES would have been our QB ... 8-10 MIL was too costly [injured shoulder or not] ....

this trade cost us. a lot of our targets signed elsewhere today. mawae and givens to the titans. and i don't know if anybody can confirm this, but i heard sam adams signed with the giants. :boohoo:however i am very happy with culpepper. let brees lose in new orleans.
