I think it would have been a 54 yard attempt. Kinda surprised they didn't bring out Carpenter to kick it considering going for it on 4th and 5 is real risky, luckily we converted.

On a side note, I hate being at the game and how they don't show you how long the FG is

EDIT: Disregard, just saw a thread on this that I had been completely missing. My b.

I think Sparano has some balls, and i like it...

I think it was necessary, that would be more than 7 yards more than dan's career long, which werent in clutch situations. There was absolutely no reason why we should of been in that position and he wouldnt have to make that call if the staff would be half that aggressive throughout the game. Put a stamp on a team after you have them where you want them. I dont believe in running up the score but when you've watch the dolphins and the insane things that seem to happen over the past 5 years, maybe running up the score wouldnt be a bad idea. On that note.. go ted ginn!! great job, great run, great clutch catch!! i started T.O. over ginn this week as well!! damnit!

how many times has the team gone for it on 4th downs so far this season? and how many times have they converted? i'm not sure what the stat is on that...

here's a neat little trick.....look on the scoreboard at the yard line the ball is placed on.....take that number and add 17....theres the length of an attempted FG

It's a tossup. In the post-game press conference, Sparano said that Chad Pennington came over and said that he knew they could do it, and urged Sparano to go for it. Sparano said that he liked Chad's confidence in that moment, and let him go for it.

I thought that it was necessary to go for it. Dan hasnt been out there on a situation like this and it wouldve been a very long attempt for a rookie.

I agree with the decision to go with it. I don't have much faith with our kicker yet, and I think Sparano has the concern.

Carpenter's kicks doesn't get much height. The further away he is, the lower his trajectory is, which is the main reason his other kicked was blocked. If you watch his kicks from intermediate distances, they do not get higher then the upright posts, as we see other kickers do. If we did not go for it on 4th and 5, that distance he would've faced was a high percentage chance of his kick being blocked because of his trajectory.

I thought it was the only option....considering

1. how well our d has played and how Oakland's offense has struggled.

2. Only needing 5 yards keeps basically every play in the book an option.

3. 50 yard + field goals in Miami are tough. kicking off the grass, the wind and all that heavy air, makes it more of a risk than going for 5 yards.

it was basically the only choice. Pooching a punt down there was a chicken **** way to play and Sparano knew that.....and what a great play call. I'm proud to be a dolphin fan!

I was at the game and in that endzone. I couldnt breathe i was so nervous. I turned to a buddy and said, this might be game. But deep down i just knew we would get it. Besides, that was the same endzone Janikowski missed from earlier. It was pretty windy down in the bowl yesterday, so im glad we went for to set up a shorter kick for Dan.

I'm actually ok with the decision whether it worked or not. Carpenter's career long at this point is 47 and I'd rather save a long FG attempt for another point in a game where the game isnt on the line. Plus, if he makes it...the raiders have 3 timeouts and lots of time to drive down the field. Add to that the special teams is constantly getting scorched...so you might assume the raiders would have great field postion to work with as well. Oh yeh, and Janikowski can hit from 60 if needed...
