What Do Brewer, Fuller, and Brooks Tell You About Roster Building?

He is that bad when it comes to the draft itself. This team doesn't have a lot of young talent and that falls directly on him.
Grier's biggest mistake may have been gambling on unknown coaches like Flores and McDaniel.

Perhaps Miami has a playoff win or more with a more experienced coach.

Lots of good points made on this thread. What is the solution? A long-tenured GM like Grier will not do it because it would reflect badly on all the moves + money he spent, but "blow it up" is the only real way to go. A new GM must come in and build a team that can beat Buffalo in the cold. Pretty simple really, a team with an identity that can beat Buffalo, win our division and we are back in the playoffs. We have a few good players we should keep, but jettison all the high-paid guys, even Tua. Waddle..gone. Chubbs...gone. Hill....gone. Ramsey....gone. I don't care if it ruins our cap, etc. New GM, new coach in that order. Ross does not get to pick them either. Bring in some respected football men who have built teams like I mentioned (with solid OL + DL) and pay them to consult, find a GM and let him find the HC and build a team. It will be painful to watch, but at least there would be hope. I have none with this regime.
Only way we can win in the cold weather is to get bigger. Only way we can win with the current team is to get home field advantage throughout the playoffs and that’s off the table this year

and the last 24 and the next 3-5, at least, sadly

What would you think of the Dolphins bringing in Drew Allar next year, as a potential-future/back-up for Tua?
If you asked me that last year i would have said absolutely not. I saw a kid who had elite arm talent and the size you look for but was extremely tentative, afraid to push the ball downfield or into tight windows, which is why his TD/INT ratio was so good. He managed games, didn't win them, and lacked the accuracy (sub-60% overall, sub-50% in 4 games) needed to consistently win tough games. He seemed to lack that little extra you need in a QB, very quiet on the field and not stepping up in those big moments.

This year though, he's changing the narrative a bit. He's a little more vocal on the field. His accuracy is improved....71% overall, no game under 65%. He's manipulating the pocket, sliding around to throw and taking off at times for first downs. He is pushing the ball downfield, +3 yards per attempt. Has it led to a few extra INTs? Yes...mainly that USC game. But what stood out in that game was not getting down on himself and coming back to throw for 391and 2TD to win. That said, he still needs refinement and i do still have concerns about his "presence" to lead a franchise. He's not the alpha many look for and i'm sure he'll get a lot of Herbert comps for both personality and size/arm. This game today against Ohio State will show if he's taken that next step or not.

My opinion on drafting him in general is dependent on his draft slot, which i think will be much higher than it should be. So it's likely a no for me. Maybe that changes the more i see him against good teams the rest of this season. For Miami in particular, i don't think he's a good fit for this McD offense.

I don't think the McD offense is a fit for the NFL...with him calling the plays...I really like Allar as a prospect though, ya that USC game was kinda tough, but really is an outlier so far.

This game isn't helping him. He's not making bigtime throws bc OSU is blanketing receivers so they aren't "college open", but you need to be able to trust your receivers and make tight throws....like to Warren. The openings in the NFL will be like this game.

Yep...its tight. Been better 2nd half though.

The Dolphins didn’t do everything wrong this off-season, they did have a few good signings (blind squirrel will always find nuts). Brewer, Fuller, and Brooks have all been pretty darn good. They play hard, haven’t been hurt, and are vets that don’t make dumb mistakes. The three contracts average out to $7.75mm per year.

Aaron Brewer, 3 years, $21mm, $7mm per year.
Kendall Fuller, 2 years, $15mm, $7.5mm per year.
Jordyn Brooks, 3 years, $26.25mm, $8.75mm per year.

If you built the roster with their equivalents, the starting 22 would take up $170mm of cap space. Which overstates the cost of building a roster this way, because if draft well, you should have a few players on their rookie deals starting as well (maybe 5-10), which cost far less money. But even if use the $170mm, that would leave $85mm to fill out the rest of the roster.

I believe, if you built our entire starting lineup out of guys that are equivalent players to these 3, had none of the "superstars," and then filled out the rest of the roster with the leftover cash, the team would be a fair bit better than what we are now. Not kidding, I think we would have a chance of being 5-2 or 6-1 right now. Being pretty good at every position, with no big weaknesses, and with guys that are tough, and know what to do and don’t make mistakes, goes a long way, even without superstars at any single position.

I think Grier and the Dolphins went with a barbell strategy. We have a lot of superstar contracts on this team. I wouldn’t be surprised if we lead the league in superstar deals. The consequence is to fill out the roster, the other end of the barbell is a lot of guys, including starters, on really cheap deals. This does not seem to work, especially when it is poorly executed. The problem is the guys on superstar deals aren’t really playing like superstars. Then the guys on cheap deals stink, and have left us with big holes. The guards, the interior DL (Pilli and Benito), and Poyer. Then a few other guys in the middle area of cost, like captain David Long, have also stunk.

When the superstars don’t play like superstars, and you also have gaping weaknesses on the roster that other teams can exploit, your team will not be very good.

Contrast this with Kansas City. They have fewer players on superstar deals than we do. But the players they pay the big money to largely have been really good and lived up to their contracts. Then they have a much bigger middle class than the Dolphins, given fewer superstar deals, so they do not have the gaping weaknesses on the roster that we do. I think this team building strategy works better.

Granted, there is an execution issue w/regard to whatever roster building strategy you pursue. In the case of the Dolphins, I think we chose a sub optimal barbell strategy of building the roster (merger of superstar and cheap), and the execution has been poor as well. We also ended up with a team with little in the way of identity.

This is all part of the job of a GM. You are building a mosaic, not a spreadsheet. In addition to his failings evaluation individual talent and deciding what to pay people, I think Grier also misses the forest through the trees with regard to building a winning football team. I do not think the barbell strategy is a good idea, and it is a worse idea when the execution of the strategy is also poor.

Grier does not have a true team philosophy. From what I’ve heard he simply gets goodies for each different coach. While he needs to be on board with the star and HC he has to do better.

This says a lot:

The lions roster is full of playmakers they drafted.. laporta, gibbs, branch, amon ra, hutchinson.. whatever BS "plan" Grier & co have been circle jerking on here sucks from all angles. Seems like mgmt is more interested in having a country club atmosphere for the players and being their buddies. Grier has to go he's pissed away picks, put us in cap hell, and picks HCs without any experience. Times up bye bye.
