Practice Squad
First off I would just like to say I think that we did as much as any team could do without a 2nd, 5th, and 6th round pick. We made a huge improvement to our weakest aspect of our team last season with the addition of Jason Allen. And we got good value throughout the entire draft
1. S Jason Allen, Tennessse - Versatile player who runs in the 4.4's. Saban passed on many other intrieging players to draft Allen so you know he was highly regarded.
2. QB Daunte Culpepper- We get our QB of the future and only have to give up a 2nd round pick
3. WR Derek Hagan, Arizona State- Highly productive in college and should be future starter.
4. OT Joe Toledo, Washington- Perfect pick because he could play tackle or guard. Good value as I though he may have gone in the 3rd round
5. DT Manuel Wright, USC- Potential starter at DT and showed flashes last year.
6. QB Cleo Lemon/Trade AJ Feeley's Contract- In essense we made that trade to create cap room. Plus, we got a developmental prospect in Cleo Lemon
7. DE Fred Evans, Texas State- Adds nice depth and should push Matt Roth and veteran David Bowens
7. DT Rodrique Wright, Texas - Biggest steal of draft! All American with first round talent. He fell so far because he has a torn rotator cof, but once he recovers he could be a potential star in this league
7. WR Devin Aromashadu, Auburn- Good value pick. Should be special teams contributor and should push for playing time at 4th or 5th reciever.
Here are some things I take from the draft...
- By not drafting a QB, Saban believes that the Dolphins will have a quality backup at QB soon.
- By not getting depth at RB, I would think considering Sammy Morris and Travis Minor are both not fit, that young Kay Jay Harris is making enough progress to be a serious contender for the backup spot behind Ronnie Brown
- This most likely will be Marty Bookers last season with the Dolphins
- With the pick of Aromashadu, Kelly Campbell will really have to fight for a job.
- Considering we have depth at tackle but not guard, I would think Toledo will probably move to guard. If not, then either Carey, Mcintosh or Pearson will.
- The Dolphins have the right mix of veterans and young talent to make one of the best and deep defensive lines in the NFL.
- By not drafting a LB, I believe Derrick Pope should have a good chance at a starting job
- Adding Jason Allen to the mix at safety may mean some confusion in the secondary. I don't want to say too much talent, but there has been a log jam created by the pick of Jason Allen. Lets just say you can make a case for 9 players being in the mix for 4 starting spots in the secondary, W.Allen, W.Poole, T.Daniels, A.Goodman, D.Cooper, T.Tillman, J.Allen, Y.Bell, R.Hill. And all but Cooper will be playing with a long term contract
- There is now way Lance Shulters will be returning
- The rumors about Olindo Mare being released were probably false.
I feel very good about this team right now. Lets look forward to training camp!
