First time posting a link to an article...hope it pans out...

Anyway after reading it I was wondering who of you out there have any type of real insight as to WHY our o-line coaching hasn't produced a better front...I believe we have invested strongly in the o-line over the past few years and I get it that the selections haven't been extraordinary....

But I see o-lines in new England with depth and personnel issues (just to name a team) and I know...they have Brady blah blah blah...but this is about the o-line specifically regardless of the qb or rb....... why does our line not perform consistently?

What grade would you give our o-line coaching up to this point....and....will it be improved this season?

Previous OL coaches - D-, at best. Current OL coach - incomplete.
Certainly, there wasn't amazing talent on the OL, but they also failed on basics - footwork, recognizing stunts, pad level.

I've thought it was o-line coaching the past few years. We had decent players on the line and Tannehill was still laying on his back; at a certain point, you have to point at the coaches. I hope this year is better, because I feel like we have great talent at multiple spots on the line; it's put up or shut up time.

It hard to say, but...I think the biggest toll on what has happen has been injuries.

Several times people have posted a stat that the team is 7-1 when we had Pouncey, Albert and James starting, the problem...out of two season they have only started 8 times together.

I think our talent acquisition as far as depth has been awful, you expect a drop off, but when we rolled out there with Fox and Thomas, that drop off is Grand Canyon depth.

It does look like we are trying to fix things as far a depth with the acquisition of Bushrod and Tunsil...lets hope it pans out.

Because people just cant grasp the FACT that tanny has been responsible for a LOT of his sacks. Does the line need a tweek or two? Absolutely. But they are not as bad as most have made them out. Put tom brady, hell, even derrek carr in and that line doesnt have the sack numbers tagged to it that it has now. Lamar Miller didnt have anything bad to say about them.

Tanny has BARELY decent pocket awareness. He holds on to the ball WAY to long at times. These are issues that tanny has and that have added to his sacks. Wonder coach is going to be pulling his hair out when he realises his extraterestrial abilities at coaching cant fix everything and the coaching before him wasnt to blame for every tanny shortcoming.

I so tired of hearing people blame the QB, I never ever watch a game and thought Tannehill had all the time in the world and then gets sacked. NEVER! If we are getting coverage sacks that means our wideouts sucks. But i watch Brady for years and was amazed how he could sit in the pocket for a very long time.

This is such uninformed bull****.

I have seen that , lol .

But it's been on 3rd and 30 after him getting sacked that they play max coverage and only 3 men rush ,

Even then it was embarrassing how fast they'd get there .

Can you imagine playing like that ? Max coverage , 3 man rush getting to you as if it were a 5 man blitz ?

So glad we added Tunsil

There have been no less then a half dozen threads disproving this line of thought....

It's been a perfect storm of inadequacy in pass protection...

1. Failure to identify players and not replacing them or trying to replace them with 3rd tier FA's and draft picks.
2. Failure to develop but that is only a SMALL part. (Pouncey and James had no issues developing)
3. Injuries/suspension
4. Overextending resources on injury prone, aging players
5. Complete transition to zone blocking when we had power personnel.

What investment has been made at guard since Tannehill got here?

2012: Richie and John Jerry, signed Jonathan Martin
2013: Richie for 8 games (gave up 6 sacks) then it was Nate Garner and John Jerry
2014: Signed Satele due to suspension of Pouncey who was moved to guard along with Daryn Colledge
2015: Dallas Thomas and Bill Turner, drafted Douglas

The highest investment was on a 3rd round guard to tackle conversion prospect. 2016 has seen the most investment in the line since we made the 150 mil dollar investment with Long, Smiley, Grove, Thomas, Carey. We now have depth for the first time since ?????

I can't think of two players who set a team back more than Jake Long and Jon Martin.

Tannehill dropped back about 590 times last year. He was sacked 45 times. You can probably blame 7 or 8 of those sacks on Tannehill and people still want to put all the blame on him. Did he abandon the run? Did he cause Dallas Thomas to have 5 brain farts a game? Did he get Albert injured? Did he get Pouncey suspended? Step on James toe? We're lucky he hasn't been more injured than Sam Bradford or as shell shocked as David Carr.

I've always said... you don't have as bad a oline play as we've had the past several years without multiple failures taking place.

1. Overall Scheme - it's a lot harder to block if the defense knows if you're running or passing ("Go Go"). If your scheme is asking you to zone block but your players don't have the physical ability to do it.... doesn't matter what the oline coach does. The line will never be good.

2. Talent deficiency - If you have exceptional talent, you can overcome coaching deficiencies, we didn't have enough to overcome ours.

3. QB - When the QB for whatever reasons holds the ball longer than he should, and lacks the awareness to consistently escape pressure, it adds to the coaching and lack of talent issues.

All of this adds up to one of the worst offensive lines in the league. There's plenty of blame to go around.

And to answer the OP's question..... I give the coaching an F.

Posts like these are the reason I don't know if I can trust your opinion on other things, cause you have a lot of good thoughts. But man oh man... This tired narrative. It's weak

Also Philbin was a bad coach. OL was his specialty supposedly and look where that led us? Dallas Thomas couldn't find his way to the bench. Just stubborn at times about everything. He must not have brought in good positional coaches either

The hilarious thing is that the colts with their bad OL hired him to fix it. And Grigson thinks he can!

Grade on Foerster? What's the scale? Because if I make my own, I'd have to give him 5 fingers and a salami.
