What does he really do? In GB everyone raved about how he put together the gameplans and how he was a master at it. By all accounts here though Sherman has full control of the offense and Coyle has full control of the defense. Ireland decides everything that goes on personell wise. So what exactly does Philbin do other than make sure the players have their shoes tied and there's no trash on the field?

I know he controls the gameday decisions like whether to go for it on 4th down, when to challenge a play etc. But the guy needs to be involved a Lot with the preperation of the team leading up to gameday to the point of him Not Sherman installs the gameplan and the playbook from week to week. Maybe he really is and I'm all wrong here but from everything I've read, seen, or heard he's left all of this up to the co-ordinators.

Oh and I know a lot of HC's leave these duties up to the OC and DC but guys like Bellichek are way more involved than Philbin seems to be and he's smart enough and organized enough to take on a much bigger role and more responsibility.

He wasn't really responsible for the GB offense. He was a glorified OL coach like Sparano. He got the OC job cause nobody would take it under McCarthy and they wanted to make sure they wouldn't lose Philbin cause they liked him as an OL coach. Everybody knew he didn't call the shots in GB. Here, he is the same Sparano was, he gets the plays from his coordinators and just agrees or rejects them. He is you picking the "Madden suggested play" in Madden. He brought his old mentor to be our OC.

Joe Philbin in his coaching interview: "OK, I got this really cool idea where we have 1st and 2nd teams practicing at the same time and I just turn in my swivel chair and watch one while the other sets up"
Ireland: "Oh, that's so cool, you're hired".

He was hired to keep us speculating as to whether or not he's cut out to be our head coach.....let's begin....ready....GO!

Heard his weekly Sirius NFL Radio appearance a couple of hours ago. Either he's BS'ing the fans or he's completely clueless.

Q: What adjustment did New England make at halftime that caused all the sacks?

A: We've got to take a look at that. They played better. We let a couple of free rushers go through. Yadda yadda yadda.

When the correct answer that was obvious to everyone watching was that New England sent blitzers on almost every play and we've got to do a better job of picking them up or making them pay for man coverage.
