What does he really do? In GB everyone raved about how he put together the gameplans and how he was a master at it. By all accounts here though Sherman has full control of the offense and Coyle has full control of the defense. Ireland decides everything that goes on personell wise. So what exactly does Philbin do other than make sure the players have their shoes tied and there's no trash on the field?
I know he controls the gameday decisions like whether to go for it on 4th down, when to challenge a play etc. But the guy needs to be involved a Lot with the preperation of the team leading up to gameday to the point of him Not Sherman installs the gameplan and the playbook from week to week. Maybe he really is and I'm all wrong here but from everything I've read, seen, or heard he's left all of this up to the co-ordinators.
Oh and I know a lot of HC's leave these duties up to the OC and DC but guys like Bellichek are way more involved than Philbin seems to be and he's smart enough and organized enough to take on a much bigger role and more responsibility.
